Whitney was truly amazing. Right up there with the very best. She and Adam are definitely at that top level of an elite group of vocalists.
That was a uniquely patriotic time.....and Whitney Houston was BORN to sing the National Anthem! She sang it simply, without a lot of "curliques" (as many singers like to do) and her voice soared as she lingered on each glorious note. The joy in her face said it all.
The only one capable...in my mind...of ever equalling Whitney's performance is Adam. I would only hope that he would keep it simple, like Whitney, to let the brilliance of each note, and the meaning of each word, be absorbed by all those listening.
Of course, a part of the impact of Whitney's rendition was because of the historical timing, and the deep feeling of patriotic spirit, togetherness, and pride felt throughout the country at that moment.
My thoughts now...I dispair at the decline of patriotism in our country. I've never known it to be so divided. It seems that hate, cruelty, self-interest and mean spiritness are overwhelming all the best of what America stands/stood for all my life.
I REMEMBER what it WAS like ...after WWII...we won the fight of good against evil...we helped our fellow man to re-build war-torn nations... we welcomed refugees.....WE WERE PROUD TO BE AMERICANS!!!!!
That PRIDE bubbled up in my chest...as if it was more than I could contain....an indescribable feeling that I'll never forget! How wonderful to feel that way about your country!
Now it's gone! Who would have thought it was so vulnerable!
