OUT 4th Annual Power 50

Although Ellen DeGeneres finds herself back in pole position, many names have fallen or dropped out altogether (au revoir Rosie), while others have rocketed up (Rich Ross, Tom Ford) as their successes warrant. And then there are those we never saw coming, such as one Adam Lambert, whose attention-grabbing run on American Idol was largely interpreted as a referendum on tolerance.

Not everyone has to be a Lambert fan to appreciate the power of his position to influence our cultural and social attitudes for the better—one of several factors taken into consideration when compiling this list. The others are political clout, individual wealth, and a person’s media profile.

47. Tim Gunn (dropped 2 spots from last year)

7. Neil Patrick Harris (up 21 spots from last year's ranking of 28)

5. Adam Lambert (new entry to the rankings this year)

Lambert shattered the glass closet of American Idol, arguably ruining the show itself in the process (this season’s mealymouthed class merely played catch-up), and his kinky American Music Awards performance forced ABC to break out its rule book. His Rolling Stone cover was the mag’s best seller of 2009, and midrange domestic debut sales of For Your Entertainment are only the launching pad for an international career. Who did we talk about before?

4. Rachel Maddow (same position as in 2009)

3. Anderson Cooper

1. Ellen DeGeneres (up one spot from number two last year)

Is this only for gay people or gay friendly people too? Because I see Anderson Cooper there and he's not gay, is he? My mom says he's dating a woman.

anon 1:01 PM: Anderson is publicly dating Ben Maisani. That makes him gay.

Oh yeah, Anderson Cooper has been out a long time. Love his reporting. He's one of my favorites on CNN.

It makes you wonder how many others are still in the closet. And I have to wonder about someone who doesn't know about the brilliant Mr. Cooper.

Barry Manilow is quiet about his sexuality but it is well known that he has been living for years with his partner. How many others living a life of lies. It must be so difficult.

omg that's shocking. Has Anderson come out of the closet yet? Why haven't I heard about it on the news and stuff? Wouldn't it be HUGE?

Adam will be #2 next year. Ellen will be #1 for the next 10 years for sure. Maybe Anderson will also move up a spot next year. Adam and Anderson will battle for the second spot.

LOL. I thought Out Mag didn't think Adam was gay enough for them.

Gosh I guess Out had to eat their words...........along with Glaad.
Edgy with a smile goes a long way.....except when you are flipping off Aaron Hickland at the AMA's.

Please vote for Adam on the Time poll. Here's how.

Here's the link:

http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1972075_1972078_1972237,00.html#ixzz0k9kjUYR

I don't twitter, but am voting like crazy. Please tell everybody you know!

IMPORTANT. Open it 3 times and scrunch them down. Wait until the circle pops up at 50% on the slide bar, slide the bar to 100%, type in the little words, click submit, refresh. Go to the second window, do the same, go to the third window, do the same.

It takes a long time to refresh, so with 3 windows open, voting in rotation, by the time you get back to the first window, it's refreshed and ready to go, etc., etc.

Seems like more gay well-known people are finally freeing themselves of hiding their real partner preferences.Ricky Martin,Anderson Cooper, etc. Maybe Adam being true to his identity and proud of the total human beingthat he is gave them the courage to do the same. You are much more than your sexual preference. Everyone deserves to love and be loved. Adam is a loving, kind being that for me is the best part of him. I admire and respect his honesty and desire to live his authentic life. funbunn40
