Adam Lambert has moved into the #14 position on the all-time album sales list for American Idol alumni, surpassing Bo Bice, the Season 4 runner-up, in total U.S. album sales. With his songs getting steady airplay and pulling in thousands of downloads, the Season 8 runner-up has been able to command a 2,000 to 3,000-copy sales level (average) on his first major label release, "For Your Entertainment," for weeks. Not only has he taken his total sales up a level, he's just a few thousand sales short of the #13 position, according to a continually updated American Idol alumni sales chart compiled on Wikipedia.

Keep in mind that this list is a combination of ALL albums released. Adam has only released ONE album and he has already made the list. The others in front of him all have released more than ONE album. Taylor Hicks, who is above Adam, has released THREE albums and his combined sales for all three are 763,400 copies. While Adam has sold 746,000 copies with only "For Your Entertainment".

Here is Top 16:

1. Carrie Underwood 11,933,000
2. Kelly Clarkson 10,588,000
3. Chris Daughtry 5,901,000
4. Clay Aiken 4,903,000
5. Fantasia Barrino 2,605,000
6. Ruben Studdard 2,556,000
7. David Cook 1,310,000
8. Kellie Pickler 1,285,000
9. Jordin Sparks 1,211,000
10. David Archuleta 1,003,000
11. Jennifer Hudson 798,000
12. Josh Gracin 787,000[
13. Taylor Hicks 763,400
14. Adam Lambert 746,000
15. Bo Bice 745,000
16. Elliott Yamin 687,000

AND IT HASN'T BEEN A YEAR YET and where is Season 8 winner...OK I said it ...now forget it!!!!

What number is Kris? I heard his album sales are around 300,000 copies...so that makes him very low on the ranking.

so this survey is only in the US. i think adam does well internationally plus nowadays, illegal downloading is quite rampant which was never heard before. i hope adam's second album will get a better sales.

I'm from Qatar .. And i bought a lot of copy's of his album and then i gave it to my friends .. so i think this maybe only in the USA =/

Keep in mind that this is all sales so for Clay for example that is I think 4 albums in total. And overall album sales are way way down and for example the year Clay's debut album was released total album sales were about 650 units and the year Adams' was released it was half of that at 365 units. Also, in early years excitement over debut Idol albums was higher and they did better, but year over year sales decrease each year. So Adam seems low here but he has just one album out and not even for a year. He still has better radio play than most of them except the top few and of course this does not include international sales either where few Idols beyond the top 3 have done well and meanwhile Adam had a #4 Global hit with WWFM

Well this is great news. Considering how short a time Adam's album has been out, and other mitigating circumstances that impacted his sales. I believe Adam's huge fan base, can do a hellva lot better in sales on his sophomoric album. We can easily go platium right from the gate. Yes, that's a challenge...friendly wager, if you will. I'm going to pre-buy a couple extra for friends, how about you?

It is great news! But, does these numbers only represent US sales? Because if it's overall sales, Adam's is way higher than 746k... js These numbers are bit misleading... imo ☺

OT, again, but I hope it's news for you (don't remember seeing it here)..
Some guy sent this link (http://bit.ly/al53HT) to Warren Willis several days ago. I have no idea who compiled the info or if it shows the reality of GNT up to now.. and, to be honest, the last column on those tables irritates me.. but I, for one, have enjoyed to see the number of sold out venues. The worst venue (from all POV): Lubbock TX!
The last sheet -"Time Zones"- might be of some help to US hardcore fans in the next month.

2am.. That's it! Good night(to me)/evening/day/morning (to you all).

PS: I'm wondering.. Are Adommy lovers gonna celebrate the 100th stage kiss.. and when? Isn't this a nice research topic? :-)

Let's look at 2008-2010 sales only, when the full impact of free downloads was fully felt - He moves up to #6 and will soon be #5 with the release of the acoustic cd.

Dark Side - Darlin - please look up the meaning of the word sophomoric and NEVER apply it to Adam in any way again. Thanks :)

Another encouraging news for worrywarts like me (but doing my best to avoid it:). @glitzylady this should put a pretty big smile on your face though i know you're still savoring your latest GNTs.

Dark Side,, I looked up sophomoric for you. I know this is from the dictionary but I don't think you meant it that way at all.. You were just stating it was his first album. Right? No ills taken when I read it! (my 2 cent worth)

conceited and overconfident of knowledge but poorly informed and immature -

There is more than 1 definition for sophomoric, the other is "of or pertaining to a sophomore or sophomores". A sophomore is in their 2nd year of high school, and this is Adam's 2nd album, get it?

These figures would surely be US sales only.

To the best of my knowledge, the former American Idol contestants who have released albums in Australia are Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, Chris Daughtry, David Cook, Clay Aiken and Adam Lambert and the most successful of those so far have been Kelly, Chris and Adam.

As I understand it, an artist’s sophomore album is their second album.

P.S.
Kelly, Chris and Adam are the only former American Idol contestants who have brought their music live to Australia. It pays to "look outside the box". :)

not that it matters lol, but yes, one would say "...blah blah, the artist's sophomore album will be released in the Spring blah blah...", you wouldn't not use sophomoRIC in that way, just plain sophomore. (I think :), pretty sure).

and you also wouldn't say "you wouldn't not use..." like I just mistakenly did above, ha ha!!

For all the awards and hype, album sales etc of Carrie Underwood, I don't think anyone outside the US has ever really heard of her.

We have heard of her if we´ve seen AI. If not, she is totally unknown. She´s more of a country singer and country music isn´t big outside US I think, at least not in this country.

@Eva, agree
country music really seems to be a US phenomenum (sp?), I don't know of anywhere else that embraces it like the US. I only started watching AI in season 5, don't know if it was broadcast here before that or whether it was but I didn't watch it.
