The X Factor's Aiden Grimshaw Sings "Mad World"

Aiden Grimshaw performs 80's song "Mad World" receiving an excellent response from the judges last night.

UPDATE:

Simon Cowell mentioned Adam Lambert on tonight’s X Factor. Well, sort of.

It was contestant Aiden Grimshaw’s performance of Mad World that reminded Simon of Adam’s performance of the track on American Idol – we’re not surprised, there were similarities in the performances.

After Aiden’s performance, Simon said: “Interestingly, this is the second time I’ve sat on one of these shows and been blown away by that song. It happened once in America and it’s just happened again tonight.”

Here is Adam's version of MAD WORLD from last year.

Adam Lambert Mad World from James Winter on Vimeo.

It’s great that he mentioned Adam (we’re assuming of course), but it’s such a huge shame that he didn’t mention Adam by name. Adam deserves much more recognition in the UK and a mention on the X Factor wouldn’t have done him any harm.

This just seems like such a copy of Adam's take on it, but not nearly as good. No extra notes on
"very nervous" or high part in "looked right thru
me", no high notes on ending. Yawn...

Wow, He looks Really Angry. But I guess that's just another interpretation of the lyrics. Not a very pleasant voice to listen to either. Well, best of luck.

Hope judges not comparing to Adam's take of this song, it falls pretty short. Kinda sounds like he is copying Adam's version, unfortunately, not that beautiful clear tenor.

He looks scary to me, not a good impression.

This guy is downright scary acting and looking...and don't care for his voice either.

Anonymous said...

No, not very good. He acts and looks like he's about to lose control and tear up something. He should know better than to do Adam's song, because no one compares to Adam, and that makes him look baddddd!

Anonymous said...

Watching him is freaking me out like Tim Urban did on Idol last year when some well meaning mentor (I think it was Jamie Fox) told him to look into the camera as if he was singing to a loved one. He looked manic to me and that's what this guy looks like.

Sorry, from the Gary Jules version to the chair and the lighting, I call it a copy cat except for one thing ~ he has no where near the voice Adam does. In fact, he reminds me of Neil Young who's voice isn't my cup of tea but he's had decades of success.

Who knows

This is a change of topic but, I just looked up videos of Alisan Porter who was mentioned on an earlier thread (Ask-Reply) and who also co-wrote Aftermath.

All I can say is she is simply A M A Z I N G!

She reminds me of the young soulful singing Linda Rondstadt if anyone here knows who I am talking about.

People let it be. Simon doesn't have to mention Adams name bec. we all know whom he was referring to. Simon was right when he said that Adam will be a star. That's why a lot of young kids are copying our Adams style . People are watching around the world and they recognize Adams excellent talent and sincerity of his voice.

Anonymous said...

yikes nice try but in my opinion no one will every top Adams performance of that song. No disrepect to that dude what so ever. It takes Alot of guts and my heart goes out to him for standing up there and doing it at all. I know I couldn't do it so my hat off to him. The vocals are weak and the face is scary!

Simon thought Adam was OT.. geez .. I actually like Aiden's dramatic interpretation, but his voice lacks quality and range.

Adam's vocals are glorious and one of a kind. Aiden is very young & he needs to develop his voice. Simon Should have given Adam his due by naming him ,after all how many English singers has America welcomed? Isn't it time for England to recognize& embrace Adam for his incredible talent ,charisma and good humor?

EPIC FAIL!!!

My thought on this matter is that Simmon Cowell is trying so hard to find someone like Adam. Hence, Prince Poppycock on AGT and now this guy. Aiden performance was just alright. It wasn't a jaw dropping performance of Mad World like Adam's for sure.

The voting for grammys has closed, there were 20,000 nominees. we have to wait til Dec 2nd, to hear who made it
I thought the kid singing Mad World looked scared to death, when he first started singing. He didn't realise how big those shoes were that he was trying to fill. I am glad they showed Adams video of it, and we could tell the difference. Simon may not have heard many good singers lately, and has forgotten how imaculate Adams voice is.Adam is a super star, that young man has a long way to go. Good luck to him.

Anonymous said...

anon 8:09 Prince Poppycock is the closest thing we'll EVER get to Adam Lambert (for this generation). They both hail from L.A they probably both have heard of each other before the reality shows. Here's to hoping Adam gets nominated if not wins a Grammy 2011 (pouring myself a shot of vodka and downing it).

Anonymous said...

Can't believe the judges were blown away by this. Must be slim pickins this year on that show.

Anonymous said...

I was blown away - by how scary it was.

Anonymous said...

Omg, to watch this again it seems like it was such a long time ago because he has come such a huge star now. Adam was doing so well with his GNT tour in the US & now internationally! He has become a Superstar!!!

Anonymous said...

SORRY!! No Comparison!!!!!!!! Besides, this dude looks mad as hell!

Anonymous said...

Simon Cowell and Simon Fuller (the latter is Adam's manager and former American Idol producer) are not in good terms. And AI and Xfactor are rival shows. Therefore, Simon C. will never again mention the name Adam Lambert because it is not in his interest (read $$$$).

lousy performance!! adam 's way better x1000000

If you click on source, its from the site Flecking records, a guy called Frankie Genachi, he regularly posts bits about Adam, and seems to be the only UK journalist who gets him and is trying his best to get his name out there. So far 76 comments all for Adam..

this version of mad world is not bad but not as good as adam's. simon is one person who does not give free ads very often.

Anonymous said...

Wow. This guy's voice was very nasal and flat. The chair, the lighting, the drama...rip-off of Adam's version. C'mon, at least use a different prop than a chair - that's the ONLY thing Adam had on his set! Sorry, dude - I did not, personally, care for this. Had to stop the clip before it was over.

Then - (as fan4fun would say...where has she been, anyway?) - sweet Adam, the song bird. To watch his clip after Aiden's was like drinking the sweetest, most sooth glass of ice water after fighting my way through a sand storm! Like applying a band-aid to a wound.

And yes - you can really see what a long way Adam has come in the last year. It's just awe-inspiring.

He looked frightened or nervous .... quite fierce actually. Not crazy about his voice - it sounded a little gravelly at times.

Oh no....sorry Aiden...it took a lot of courage to try to sing Mad World after the heavenly voice of Adam Lambert's version. No one can come close to Adam, and I mean NO ONE. Good try, though.

I also thought as mentioned by DC Canadian above, a similiarity to sound of Neil Young in the beginning of the song, but he seemed nervous, inexperienced and didn't have the confidence, instinctive facial expressions or exceptional vocal ability of Adam. It's tough to get up there and cover a song sung so perfectly by Adam. I still think the finest version was the one that Adam did at the end, final 3 performance with the long coat. Every note was perfect in every way. The GNT version fast tempo seemed to me like he wanted to hurry up and finish the song. Adam probably just wanted to change it out of boredom, but guess I am spoiled by the slower one that in my estimation could never be improved upon. It's IMHO stunning!! funbunn40

Maybe Simon tried hard not to compare between these two (Adam and this singer on x-factor), cuz in this battle Adam wins BIT TIME!!!
Anyway, I thought it was a good performance. This guy is interesting enough.. kind of theatrical. They all should thank Adam for putting theatrical performances on the map.
Well, I guess that what happens when you push the envelope.

Anonymous said...

and why the hell he's shaking like a leaf?

Anonymous said...

his performance sucks!!!!

Anonymous said...

i watched this last night...it was the first live show and the first time the public can vote..Aiden is only 18 and he was very nervous...of course nobody can compare to Adam singing mad world and i felt the need to watch Adam's performance as soon as x factor went off ha ha...i was shouting at my telly saying say Adams name simon FFS!!!! i don't think anybody will ever come close to Adam in any of these talent programmes ever again....i thought it was a rip off too with the blue lighting and everything...

chezza-sherbert/brit fan :D xx

oh also what i did notice that Simon is embracing anybody who dares to be different and thinks everyone else is so dull...i said it was the Adam Lambert effect, because yes everyone else is so dull in comparison haha...

Anyone who tries to copy Adam is a fool. It just ain't happening!

I agree, Adam is way way way better. Simon is a brat as far as Adam is concerned and I hope one day he understands exactly how much.

Princessshakeitup said...

I did not find this kinda funny but I did find it kinda sad. Please. Don't.

Anonymous said...

In no way does this guy compare to Adam Lambert. You would have to be a fool to think so. Aiden was flat, nasal, monotonous and very nervous. If Simon thinks he was good, then he has lost it. Overall, the ten top acts selected were nothing special to me. No one blew me away in the same manner that Adam did on AI. I couldn't wait for his performance each week. With Aiden, he might need time and more work on his vocals.

Anonymous said...

I think Aiden has a decent voice. But comparing it to Adam would be delusional! Aiden's performance is very creepy. (He looks like a freak who's about to hurt someone... scary!)
Adam's whole performance is hauntingly beautiful and totally honest. It's been almost 2 years, and I can still remember the first time Adam sang Mad World.

And why don't I hear Simon said something about Aiden's performance being theatrical? He said it a couple of times to Adam before. And Aiden's performance is waay more theatrical than Adam's! So WTF, Simon?

Anonymous said...

Absolutely not "standing ovation" material. Of course Simon didn't give Aiden a standing o right? Did he give Boyles a standing o?I don't recall. "Mad World was not at the top of my list for Adam's AI performances, but it sure did stop a lot of people in their tracks. There is absolutely no one like Adam Lambert!!!

The X-Factor has lower standards for the competitors than Idols. It is the same in every country they use these formats.

I wonder what happened to Paul Potts. Now that man could sing opera. I refuse to listen to Susan Boyle. Cannot understand why people keep pouring her millions of pounds. She don't know what to do with that money. Besides she's a nervous wreck.

Anonymous said...

Oh poor Aiden, dont be too hard on him! He's 10 years younger than Adam and doesnt have all that show and stage experience that Adam has had over the years which has helped him hone his vocal skills to perfection. Of course it isnt as good a version as Adam's, but it was a good try.

Anonymous said...

Anon 6.48 you say let it be - that Simon doesn't have to mention Adam's name because we all know who he is referring to - but the point is that in the UK most people watching that show last night wouldn't have had a clue that it was Adam that Simon was referring to - as I sat and watched it and he started to say what he did I was willing him to mention Adam's name but it didn't happen. I wish he had, it might have led to people wondering who he was and to look him up. I think there is a lot of talent on the X Factor this year - I really enjoyed it, but last night was the first live show and I think Aiden was actually petrified- he could hardly speak when interviewed at the end of the peformance - but in my opinion in no way can his talent compare to Adam's

Anonymous said...

Young Nathan Brake’s version (Australia Idol 2009) is a lot better than Aiden’s performance but neither of these lads have the experience that Adam possessed when he entered American Idol. Aiden does look petrified understandably – I know I would’ve been!

It really is a shame Simon not mentioning Adam by name but perhaps he thought it prudent not to?

Anonymous said...

Adam doesnt need a Simon Cowell plug anyway. He's moving away from all that reality tv, teeny cr*p. He's his own man now and appeals to a much more diverse, grown up audience.

Anonymous said...

The original web-site for this article has over 150 responses. Not a single 1 said this adien guy could be compared to Adam Shame on you Simon for even putting that performance in the same catergory as Adam.

Anonymous said...

Very freaky that boy! He looked so nervous and like he was going to loose it.
Adam's performance was a moment of brilliance so rare!
He is just the most amazing performer and person and to compare anyone to him is a waste of time. He is so in his own category and will go down in history as one of the greats.

Come on people, everyone knows that Simon pimps the ones he likes, particularly if he has a stake in their future. Simon's performance on Season 9 was so over the top bad, to be almost comical. He greatly contributed to the lackluster season. Off topic, Anon 6:30 very familiar with Linda Rondstadt. Also think Allison should go the route that Linda did and do cross over albums for awhile. I wish Prince Poppycock would come out from behind the mask and costumes, he is talented and needs to be taken seriously. If he is known in L.A. someone will out him eventually.

@The Dark Side - enjoyed your post @ 5:12pm, agree, especially about the Simon stuff, like Simon, but you are on point IMHO. MGF.

I was surprized Prince Poppycock was mentioned, he was, is good, but nothing compared to ADAM LAMBERT~~~i do agree, i wish P.P. would have come out behind the mask and makeup, he was a good looking guy, with a good voice!!! Maybe Vegas, will get him, he would do well there, many shows there!!!!

Agree with Adam Fix 100%

In fact, I turned it off after @ 5 seconds and was soooo glad for that soothing glass of water to regain my sense of well being.

My favorite Mad World (besides this one that made me fall in love with Adam wholeheartedly, and so has a special place in my heart) is Mndchnger's Grand Rapids Idol tour video. Gorgeous.

With all due respect to the guy, but prehaps the judges were blown away by how he mirrored Adams performance with the chair, lights, smoke and even moves!
Blew me away too to see someone copy Adam. Plus why was the guy so darn angry when he sang? He kind of spooked me out!

Noone can ever compete with Adam!

Anonymous said...

Not even worth the fuss.

wow Adam Lambert fans need to show a little grace and say credit were credit is due. Aiden blew me away on saturday night as he did millions of others. I love Adam Lambert and his version of Mad World, but Aiden for me surpassed it.

The chair would have been imposed on him and not his choice as Briand Friedman is responsible for those deccisons as X Factors "creatice director"
They sat him in the chair once he was there it was upto Aiden how he performed and interpeted the song and he made very different choices from Adam Lambert. As testament to this you have all the comments on here saying how scary and creepy he was. Completley different from the reaction people would have had watching Adam. Teh ligthing was also not the same at all. on American Idol it hid Adams face from the viewers with Aiden it highlighted the face so it was used to opposite effect.
So an explanation as to how exactly he is a "copy cat" would be nice.
He made his own decisons for the song and put his own stamp on it. Wahts more unlike Adam who didnt tell me anything about the sond I didnt get from Gary Jules cover (sorry but stunning as it was its true) Aiden actually brought something new out of the song and made me think of the lyrics in a whole new way. No mean feat for a 18 year old kid.
you should watch his version of Gold Digger by Kanye West which he did for his first audition if you want to see how eclectic the kid is.

apoliges for my appaling spelling in the above post btw should preview before I click post.

I may aswell add while im here that Adam is a lovley person who hates negativity and would no doubt balk if he could read some of these posts. Aiden is such an original and exciting talent, totally different from anything I have seen before on Idol or the X Factor (not unlike Adam himself) so I think people need to get over the "how dare he sing the same song as Adam Lambert" mentatlity and open there minds to a stunning new talent.

Anonymous said...

I must say, I just watched the episode and was a bit flabbergasted by how similar the performances were. The light was not precisely the same but the focus was on him, the light, and the chair, and the song was the same. Whether or not it lighted up his face doesn’t matter, the fact is that the whole song was directed around those three things, and while this might not have been Aiden’s fault, it still makes for a pretty copycat performance.

His voice was, on top of that, slightly grating which surprised me, having liked him a lot throughout the auditions. I’m not a huge Adam Lambert fan in that I don’t really keep track of what he’s up to but I do love his voice, but this performance struck me as similar enough that I had to see if there were more people feeling the same way.

Anonymous said...

Adien had strange face look when he sang this song, it seemed the song was too high for him therefore his face was in a struggling mode, not a same level with Adam, the judge's comments were overpraising. Disappointed performance.

Anonymous said...

^^^^^^^thats not true at all^^^^^^^^^^
One thing I have noticed about Aiden over the past few weeks of watching him is that he has an ability to really submerge himself in a song.
When he sings it comes from a very real place. With Aiden it isnt a case of "this is a sad song so I will do my sad face".
The emotion isnt simulated he is able to get himself to that place were he is really feeling it and that is what you can see on his face when he performs.
If you watched this performance with no sound and just observed Aiden his face and body language if asked you would still be able to tell what specific emotions were driving this song(lonliness, issolation, frustration) The emotion was surging through his body and across his face and not just comming out in his voice.
That is a SKILL and a very rare one.
He would make a pretty special actor if he wished to turn his hand to it.
Watch Diamonds Are Forever, Nothing Compares To You or This Years Love, Gold Digger if you need further convincing.

or in fact you could watch this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztsuz3qz1Kk
Aiden is the real deal like Adam.
:-)

Can't believe the judges were blown away by this lousy performance. I mean, SERIOUSLY? No offense to Aiden *whoever he is* but I totally hated his voice. It doesn't have the "wow" factor. I don't know, it just isn't pleasing to the ears. And look at his face, oh my was he trying to give us nightmares? It seemed so scary! Most importantly, his performance seemed like a copycat version of Adam's in American Idol. Their voices are just miles apart. He's no match compared to Adam -- the vocal range, charisma, stage presence and awesome personality. And please, they aren't even comparable because Lambert's performances are just simply the best!
