It was just two years ago that the then 26-year old Adam Lambert stunned audiences on the TV talent show ‘American Idol' and won over famously hard-to-please judge Simon Cowell. Despite not winning the season eight title, the singer songwriter has since climbed singles charts around the world and sold more than three-quarters of a million copies of his debut album "For Your Entertainment". This week on TALK ASIA, CNN's Anjali Rao sits down with Lambert during his first world concert tour to talk about his chart success, the headline grabbing moment when he publicly acknowledged he was gay and why he kissed a male band member during a recent performance.

The singer explains how he doesn't mind that his professional singing career was kick-started by a reality TV show such as ‘American Idol': "I rather live with maybe a little bit of stigma or a little bit of the credit issue as opposed to living in my studio apartment in Hollywood still making demo's on garage band."

Lambert shares his experience on Idol and the judges: "I realized very quickly that I couldn't put that much weight on their response. Because they are just three people. Opinions are subjective, everyone has them." and how he dealt with their comments: "if I take what they say to heart too much then the audience is going to see that, and I don't know, I know what I just did was either good or bad, sometimes it was a mess, and I'd be like yeah that was kind of crazy. Sometimes I was really thrilled with the performance and would get a mixed bag reaction, and I'd be like, well I liked I had fun, I know the audience had fun, and just being who I am up there."

The singer also talks about his sexuality and how he made no big secret about the fact that he was gay, especially in a well-publicized Rolling Stones magazine article. He tells Anjali: "I think it was more important for me to just be honest and open about who I was, that's always been something that has been very important to me. I came out of the closet when I was 18, I was out to everybody, it was never a big secret."

Though openly gay, Lambert is undecided on being a spokesperson for gay rights in America and being a musician at the same time: "You know I haven't really decided yet, to be honest with you. I definitely have my opinions that I am very vocal about and not afraid to put them out there ... I'll lend my support, but that's not what I am here to do, I'm a singer. "

On his recent appearance at the American Music Awards, the singer's display of affection for a male band member on TV resulted in 1500 complaints and a cancelled appearance on ‘Good Morning America". Lambert admits he "got a little carried away" but defends his moment: "these were things that kind of happened impromptu, the kiss, the raunchy choreography...that was something that just kind of happened. I'm very much a creature of impromptu performance. I do things by the spur of the moment both vocally and physically. That's kind of the type of performer that I am, and it has consequences on live TV apparently. It was something that in the aftermath I thought oh my gosh did I screw up, did I mess up, and looking back on it now, like a year later, it might have been too soon timing wise for people."

He also shares with Anjali, stories of growing up in a conservative area of San Diego and the real Adam Lambert without the ‘guy-liner': "in actuality I'm just a regular guy. I do walk around in just a t-shirt and jeans. And I do kick it on the weekends, with friends, and go eat have a glass of wine. You know what I mean, I do normal things."

Highlights of Adam Lambert's interview with TALK ASIA will be available online at www.cnn.com/talkasia after the first airing.
