THR caught up with Adam Lambert after his performance for a quick chat about the song's message, Lady Gaga's crusade, being back at "Idol" and his new album. Fans can purchase the "Aftermath" remix on Lambert's official site.
THR: You performed on "Idol" last season with lasers and smoke, this acoustic version of "Aftermath" was far more stripped down. Is that meant to convey the vulnerability of the song? How did you feel about the performance?
Adam Lambert: I felt really good. It was a bit out-of-body, as usual, but I always find that those are probably the best performances. There's something kind of magical that happens when you're completely in another zone. It's like peoples' energy affecting you from the outside in.
THR: And getting across the message of the song was important to you…
Lambert: Yeah, it's about being honest with yourself and the people you love. We've all been there where we've been worried about that moment -- whether it's having a secret or something to overcome or get past - of chaos that happens right before you make the big step to fix it or to relieve yourself. It's a scary time, it's uncertain, so that's one of the things that I wrote the song about. In my mind, it was about coming out and how scary a step that is. And how once you do make the leap, you go, "Wow, I feel liberated, there are other people like me, all I feel now is love!" Hopefully the message gets out there.
THR: Which ties together nicely with the Trevor Project initiative?
Lambert: It can be about a lot of different things. It's a really interesting song because one of the people I wrote it with was talking about overcoming addiction, someone else said it spoke about family. When I was an adolescent, I was really confused and had the good fortune to be raised in a very liberal, open home, but not everybody is. Back when I was dealing with that, I didn't really have a lot of examples. So that was one of the other reasons why I wanted this song to be a battle-cry, because there's not a lot of people that are championing this type of issue.
THR: One star that is championing the issue is undoubtedly Lady Gaga, who recently terminated her relationship with Target over their LGBT policy. What's your take on her recent actions?
Lambert: I think the responsibility of today's pop stars is to liberate the masses. In that everyone can be whatever they wanna be. You can march to your own beat. It's so hard sometimes in our country because conformity is the way things are pushed. I'm anti-conformity, as you can tell. But Lady Gaga has been doing a great job. I think she's fantastic. And it's something beyond sexuality. She's got a lot of ideas and savvy.
THR: Last year it was Siobhan Magnus, this year, James Durbin is getting the Adam Lambert comparisons. You just met James, what was that like?
Lambert: He's great. He seems like such a nice guy and he sounds great on the show. He's amazing, a total rocker!
THR: And the comparisons, whether welcome or dismissed?
Lambert: I take it as a compliment because I think he's good. And he said the same thing. I do see the similarities with the high rocker thing but I do think we're really different as well. It's like saying me and David Cook are the same just because we're both guys and singing rock. I think James is much more metal. And if I had to make any sort of observation, I'd venture to say he's more 80s and I'm more 70s. But I think he's really talented.
THR: Does returning to the "Idol" studio bring back those feelings of anxiety?
Lambert: It's really cool coming back because a lot of the crew is the same. They were like family to me. But yes, competing on this show is such a high pressure, stressful time. If it wasn't for the dynamic I had with so many behind-the-scenes people, I don't think I would've been as comfortable.
THR: You tweeted about recently working with songwriter Ryan Tedder, what else can you tell us about your new album?
Lambert: I think if anything, it might be a little less campy than the last one. With, I really wanted to go high glam; it was always a vibe and a concept I was in love with and I did it for a year. I think evolution is good... but I'm very drawn to music and artists that are singing from the heart about real things.
THR: Like whom? What are you listening to these days?
Lambert: The new Adele album blows my mind. Last year, that Sia album was on repeat. And I also love electronic music. I've become attracted to more organic sounds again. Even if they're electronic, I want them to feel like they came from the earth, tangible, more primal. It's going to be great. It's moody so far, but who knows. I should probably stop now because last time we did this, I said all this stuff about the album and then it was, like, “Oh that didn’t make the album.” So I don't wanna jinx it.

I totally hate electronic music. It is usually used to disquise the voice. Makes everyone of the girl singers sound just the same. Guess Adam wants to do that? Oh well, I'll just wait.
Well, I'm thinking: "organic sounds - f*** that - rock guitar yes please"
Fabulous interview. All the critics remarks have been sensationa1!! They just keep coming in like an opening night on Broadway.
Ok, so I'm stupid. Can someone tell me what the Q stands for in LGBTQ? I understand the meaning of all the other letters. Thanks. I hate to be out of step.
Wonderful interview...Adam as articulate as he usually is. He has talked about singing from the heart, writing about real experiences, looking back at his journal for ideas for this new album. I hope this new one won't be too moody. I want some great upbeat songs, songs you can move to, dance to and just feel good. Adam wants to evolve, to change and I am sure he has lots of ideas to do that in his music. Can't wait to see and hear what is is all about hopefully by the fall.
@anon 5:58
it's Questioning

Q=Questioning
@Anon 5:58 pm
The "Q" stands for "QUESTIONING" ... I guess that means they're not sure about WHERE they belong in society .........
Thanks so much for the quick answers. I thought it might be questioning, but wasn't sure. Thanks again.

the FYE album will be a tough one to beat but I am sure he is trying his best. I hope people aren't complaining already.GEESH.
Hi everyone here's a link to a cute article from Michele Collins she is really funny and her interviews with Adam were always hilarious.

OMG, @IreneRose - thanks so much. I saw that in the blogosphere early today but didn't click on it... just settling in now after a long day but wasn't gonna spend much time online, too tired - so THANKS for the tip - I love Michelle, and that was a good, funny (and just about spot on) read... she gets Adam and has been always been very supportive, in the hippest of ways :). I look at Michelle's past but very real chemistry with BB and think - imma cut a bitch...cuz I'm so jealous, lol! Thanks again IreneRose. And I agree with whoever said it upthread (and I mentioned it somewhere on 24/7 this morning I think) - there really have been a whole bunch of great blurbs in the blogosphere and twitterverse about AML's performance last night, very supportive and positive (they're just tellin' it like it is). Hope the remix track sold well!

I hope he delivers a rock sound on this next album. He can rock with the best of them. Purple Haze is great cover that he has done. he needs in the face vocals with alot of guitar this go round.
I really think the press needs to get past the sexuality thing and discuss the contributions he is making in the music industry. Sexuality has nothing to do with the music. It is so repetitive and it takes away from what he is doing with his career. I don't see this being much of an issue for other artists. If he was a bisexual man, I don't think there would be much of a fuss made about it. I would be so sick of repeating myself. He has alot of patience, because I would tell the people "NONE of your damn business".
I loved his performance last night. I have it on my DVR and watched it few times. Did slow motion on ST and JLo. Even though they didn't give Adam Standing O but they were clapping when the cameras were showing the audience. Since everyone reads between the lines whatever Adam does to me facial expression of ST at the end meant like he was thinking to himself 'boy I love his hair cut. I might rock Adam's look next week'. Wasn't ST checking Adam's necklace during commercial break? Who knows he might get a little inspired by Adam and use some glitter on himself next week!?
I also noticed Adam had a misty eyes at the ending of his performance. Just wanted to reach out and hug him. Again, loved his performance last night and overall I believe most people liked his performance, too.
Agree with you 8:07. Adam is the most patient person. He has to repeat over and over, and he's always so kind and giving. Sure, it's his career, but how many of us could be so gratious. I know I couldn't :) I've wanted him to say, "none of your damn business" but he was never do that. He may think that, but it's not in his sweet nature to verbalize that kind of comment.
Anyway, I was thrilled to hear he's actually been in the studio recording, and that he will take time later this year to conceptialize the overall feel and theme of the album. I trust his judgment. I also do not like electronic music, but I'm sure I will like what Adam selects since he has said his vocals will be front and center.
I read Michele Collins column and I have two things to say #1 I Love Her Sense of Humor....
.........#2 I Will Never Look at Crackers in the
............Same Way Again!.............JAK
To me, organic (real) music and electronic (robotic) music are totally different from each other. Not really liking the electronic but it is popular these days.
I hope Adam uses some good songwriters with established talent. I know he wants to write more on this album, but sometimes singers have had the most success with a talented songwriter. It's hard to have great talent at both. A good catchy rock song would be great.
ps. I made a bad comment about ST but since read that he was in the hospital last week - I think he was just a little bit out of sorts or not well.
Maybe they are also realizing how boring this gig really is... (except for hearing Adam of course)
@JAK, I'm all for puttin' on the Ritz! funbunn40
I love electronic music so hoping there'll be some of that on Adam's next album.
I hope he collaborates with good song writers too. He's said that's what he likes to do.
Moody? Sounds intriguing.
I wonder if he's going to have a feat artist on one or more of his songs. Not crazy about that but it might happen.
Adam is an interview's dream, and he's a dreamboat too. :)
great interview i liked it....
i watched Adams idol performance on live stream early hours of friday morning...then i couldn't wait to see him again on british tv friday night ( such a treat as it doesn't happen often ) and i wasn't disappointed...i thought Adam looked and sounded amazing....
can't believe all the fuss on other threads ha ha...i'm an honest person and tell things the way they are...i loved it, it's a keeper on my sky+ box....
i can't wait for the new album, and i don't care what sound Adam will be going for because you can 100% guarantee that it will be amazing...Adam always is :)....
chezza-sherbert/brit fan :) xx
I would love to see Adam's aftermathremix song used as a cover on Glee.
That would surely help the Trevorproject.
that's our boy congrats
It's Sat. morning 3/12 9am EST and I haven't read through threads yet, so maybe this is already linked, but there's a fabulous little blurb about Adam's appearance in this article from CBS Online News/Entertainment:
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31749_162-20042379-10391698.html
Relevant to Adam part of article:
"...Before the final elimination, Adam Lambert showed what originality and self-belief can do for an Idol contestant-- even if, in his case, he didn't actually win his series.
Looking strangely clean-shaven and spectacularly healthy, Lambert delivered an acoustic version of his "Aftermath".
Its power lay in the controlled manner of Lambert's delivery and in his eyes, which, by now, have become more piercing than that of any Bond villain or blockbuster assassin, but in a good way.
Dirty-Diddy Money and Skylar Grey offered a pleasing and ultimately portentous interlude of their hit "Coming Home."...
and hey you peeps upthread - no sexuality references - woot woot... baby steps I guess, baby steps :)... and love the mention, in this blurb, of CONTROL Adam demonstrated Thursday night - I agree!
Again, quite a few pieces in the blogosphere that were very very favorable about BB's appearance.
MGF
OT PS: Hey there Chezza! I hope things are okay with you. I've only been on 24/7 lately in my typical ebb&flow/feast-or-famine manner, so I don't know if you've been on either, but I was thinking of you the other day - hope things are okay with your family!
Remember when FYE first came out and it threw us for a loop because it wasn't the "IDOL" Adam? Well, we soon realized it was the absolute best! Fresh, new, and RISKY! I have confidence that Adam's new album will be the same. We will listen and warm up to it and soon the songs will be in our DNA, just like the FYE songs. He is so creative! I pray that this new CD will have his first mega-hit on it. I know it will! I just hope he doesn't forget the "sexy" in this new one. I love Adam as sexy as hell.
@MGF Your welcome, I love Michelle Collins, she is so witty and her interviews and reviews about Adam are hilarious, glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for the link to CBS love to hear good critiques about Adam.
@ chezza-sherbert I agree with you about Adams new CD he can sing anything and I would love it, he is amazing.
IreneRose
Three words make me cringe in the music world...
ELECTRONIC........POP...........and RAP
I'm going to keep my mouth shut and wish for the best. FYE previews left me cold and yet I came to love the music, so I'm just going to trust Adam to have something for everyone......JAK
yes JAK, trust Adam... I think he's earned it ;)
Look at this lovely bit from http://poponthepop.com/2011/03/adam-lambert-performs-aftermath-on-american-idol/
"Adam Lambert performed an acoustic version of his song "Aftermath," and he did it so well, per usual. Is it just me or is Adam a much more confident performer these days? He also looks so happy, he's glowing! Adam could sing the phone book and make it engaging and beautiful. It doesn't matter how much one likes or dislikes a certain song, when Adam sings it, it's entertaining and damn good!
Those eyes, that smile. Now he just needs to take it off. Enough with the teasing already! It's just not right."
I hope he doesn't go in the electronic direction with that amazing voice. He needs to keep the voice the center of the music and not want to do what all the other artists are doing. I wouldn't jump on the bandwagon, but go in a different direction and break some rulz. We know Adam loves breakin' all the rules. I would bring rock into the mix with some pop and a little dance. He is such an amazing rock singer! Bring the rock!
make the album harder with a rock edge, but keep the sexy! lots of hair, liner, and leather! I'm getting hot thinking about it!
@ Chezza Sherbert...
Hi, fellow, so good to see you posting again! More prayers for your beloved dad tomorrow in my church, right? It may help if you connect with us and think positive... 7:00-8:00PM (UK time). God bless all your family!
MGF - In the CBS online News blurb, one sentence started out "Looking strangely clean-shaven..." I don't get it. Adam wasn't wearing much makeup, but I've never seen him perform on tv or anywhere else for that matter, needing a shave. Am I the only one that caught that?
I think what they were saying or I should say seeing was his face without theatrical makeup....the darker sort of pancake makeup he formerly wore.
He looked fair skinned, which he naturally is and the minimal makeup was so clean looking. Sigh!
.............JAK
Sometimes the foundation is too thick and eyeliner and shadow is too heavy for my taste as I think it ages him. I prefer the cleancut look, but for concerts glam is fun and the place to get creative. I like the mascara and liner, but not the raccoon look. I think instead of enhancing his beautiful eyes, it can be a distraction when overdone. I know his motto is, "more is more," but when you naturally have it all, you don't need it. JMO, nothing deep, just superficial chit chat passing time for next Adam sighting! funbunn40
There's clean shaven and there's no eye liner.
Adam is always clean shaven.
funbunn40
Perhaps it's because we're only a decade apart age wise we think a lot alike. The heavy foundation was very aging, thats why everyone was so astounded last night and saying how young he looked.
Wait a minute that wasn't last night...it was night before last! It's 4:39 A M !!!!!Bye JAK
I love Adam's clean shaven look, no make up! He looked so much younger and absolutely gorgeous!
I aint hating, quite the opposite, I'm a big Adam Lambert fan, big, but our boy had plenty of makeup on Thursday night, PLENTY, I bet more, by his own choosing, than the show's makeup artist and producers would probably normally require for a tv appearance, js. Adam is Adam, thank heavens, love him in all his forms. Would only want for him to be comfortable, 'ya know, when appearing on freaking national television. Hope you felt comfortable Thursday night Adam, you looked it anyway, so good for you.
All contestants, JLo, ST, Randy, Seacrest everybody who´s on camera wears make up on TV. If they didn´t they would look very gloomy and strange. I don´t think Adam wore more than anybody else this time.
