The Top 10 'American Idol' Performances Of All Time (by Lyndsey Parker)

Adam's performance of "Ring Of Fire" topped the chart.

1) Adam Lambert - "Ring Of Fire"
This was probably the most polarizing performance on "Idol," and definitely the most exciting. Love him or hate him, Adam knew how to get people's attention, sometimes get people downright angry, and make those who were faint of heart and/or feeble of mind squirm in their support hose--all very good things in the world of rock and pop. On this fateful night, Adam took a strong stance, making it clear that he planned to stay true to himself, even if that meant freaking out Randy Travis with his goth manicure, or refusing to "go country" on Opry Night (though I think black-clad country maverick Johnny Cash would have appreciated this remake). Many Glambert performances--"Mad World," "Tracks Of My Tears," "Whole Lotta Love"--could've made this list, but "Ring Of Fire" is the one that really put him on the glittery map.

Here the rest of the top 10:

2) Blake Lewis - "You Give Love A Bad Name"
3) Fantasia - "Summertime"
4) David Cook - "Hello"
5) Kelly Clarkson - "Natural Woman"
6) Kris Allen - "Heartless"
7) Adam Lambert & Allison Iraheta - "Slow Ride"
8) Bo Bice - "Whipping Post"
9) Jason Castro - "Hallelujah"
10) Casey James - "Jealous Guy"

Luv Lyndsey Parker!

Any of Adam's performances could be number 1#. Everyone pick your own favorite, we're all right.

oops, typo meant #1

Great list! In a way, those were all Idol-changing performances, which set the bar in originality, arrangement, boldness and singing chops.

How can one possibly choose among them? They were all memorable and since my DELL-A was being repaired, I was forced to watch my VHS tapes of Idol performances. I needed a "fix". DELL-A was just delivered into my hot little hands her MUTE problem all fixed and she once again speaks!

Son-in-law got an extra big hug!.........JAK

I have all his performances, including his audtions, on a dvd and I watch it alot, along with his GNT dvd. He is perfection! I wish he were making some appearances on tv. I miss seeing and listening to him. I'll always treasure his Jay Leno appearance. They were so funny together.

All his performance could be #1, but with Ring of Fire I think he went the most out of the box and that's why it was so memorable. Also the notes at the end-just unbelievable and a sexy hot performance. JAK happy your computer can talk and sing now, lucky you have a son in law that's so good fixing computers. Those geek squads are expensive and mess things up more sometimes.

It's so nice to see these "old" vids and recognize Adam's close family and friends in the audience. I watch them often.

I loved that he did that song in his glamnation tour and in Nashville to a sold out crowd. Who would have thought, certainly not Adam or Randy Travis back then.

Not many people commenting today. Hope they have not been raptured and only the naughty remain lol Love the ROF performance!!!

These performances remind me why I loved them--and miss that Adam. Humble, cute, appreciative.

@2:34 Adam still is humble, cute and appreciative. I hope you don't think otherwise. He knows that idol brought him fame and appreciates the fans he got from season 8 and the tons more he has now.

I remember seeing this for the first time on Idol and being stunned and mesmerised, and slightly worried that he would be voted off by those who didn't get it. Simon certainly didn't get what a perfectly marvelous, and yes, Uber-Sexy version this was/is. I have all of the Idol Studio versions of Adam's songs on a CD and this is one of my favs..VERY inspiring!!! ; ) also have the vids of his performances...this one...whoa!

Thank you Lindsey Parker. You, like so many of us get it. My DVR is still loaded with all of his Idol Performances. My family has a fit because there is not much space left to record anything but I cannot erase them.

Adam Lambert was the main reason I watched season 8 of AI. I couldn't wait each week to see what the next song would be performed by him. He had me at the first note during his audition. My favorite number was ONE, the song Simon picked for him from Bono and U2. The lyrics, the arrangement, the lighting, his outfit...all combined to make it the highlight of all the other marvelous performances for me. Adam Lambert set the bar so high during season 8 that no one has come close or will ever come close to match his superb vocal talent. He is one articulate, smart, witty, edgy, self-confident individual in a league of his own. If I need something to brighten/liven my day, I just check out any of these unbelievable performances on You Tube from season 8. A true star was born with those performances, and I, for one, am happy to have been along for the ride from the very beginning.

I am aware how blessed I am with my son in law. He's one of those rare creatures who can sit down with manual of any sort and after he's read it can fix anything! Replace car parts, do any kind of carpentry, landscaping, every kind of electronic gizmo bows to his skill. Over the 30 years we've loved him he's saved us thousands of dollars in repair bills! He just reads it and "gets"it. Whereas I cry when I have to read an insurance policy!................JAK

When I saw Adam perform ROF on AI8 I sat there and couldn't speak for quite a while. I'd never seen anything like it before. I must have re-watched ROF 30 or 40 times over in the next few weeks after the performance. I was completely blown away by his vocals, his sexiness, his stage presence and his drop dead gorgeous self. I loved every single one of his AI performances and luckily saved a good many of them. Lindsay Parker is a true fan of Adam and I so appreciate that she appreciates him.

The truth is Adam you made a great choice and it shaped your charater indeed.
I can't wait to see the next chapter of your music!

Ditto to you, CT! ROF was all the things you said. And love Lyndsey for always being a fan and writing about her love and appreciation for him and his talent. I had never watched AI but happened to be at my daughter's house when they had it on during AI8 -- I was hooked! Now my family teases me about my Adam 'obsession', but it's fine w/me 'cuz I AM obsessed!!

Ring of Fire. Oh. My. God. That was the moment I was truly blown out of the water. My breath caught in my throat, and it was quite some time before I could let it out again!

I love how polarizing that performance was - I had never watched Idol before (actually, didn't even "watch it" - technically - when Adam was on, since we didn't have a tv...just watched vid clips after the show each night) but in my mind, it was pretty good singers who made a little splash, then were never heard from again. Pretty safe performances. This was my perception, since I'd never actually watched it. Wow, did Adam grab me by the throat! I thought "OMG, here's this edgy, confident guy, with the most amazing voice I've ever heard, pushing the envelope on a milquetoast show like Idol...shaking people out of their stupors - I am SO in love with him!!".

Now I not only breathe when I see/hear Adam...I live and BREATHE Adam. Yes - it's an illness (and I love it).

Yesterday I was representing PFLAG at a local high school speaking to juniors and seniors about raising a gay son as part of their human development class. I told them what I told you on 24/7 more than a year ago now, that Leila and Adam helped me so much. Adam's honesty about his journey of self acceptance was something new..just like his performances. When I named him, I could see I had connected with this young crowd. Love the chance to revisit his awesome performance. You think some contestants are really great...and then you see our brilliant Adam and know he is the BEST.

"Ring of Fire" isn't my absolute favorite of Adam's AI performances as I loved them all, and it's too hard to choose just 1 ultimate favorite sung by our ultimate idol.

"One" has me in tears every time I hear it which isn't often because it makes me so sad - such poignant lyrics sung so exquisitely by Adam. I never liked the original but Adam's version is in a class of its own.

I could go on and on about each and every song Adam sung on AI but all I will say is I cherish them all.

@ Tess4ADAM, Thanks so much for the info.I couldn't record it when it originally came on as I was in FL. for several months and have been looking for it off and on ever since! The dvr is set!! ROF is brilliant!I loved Delana's version, but Adam took it to an atmospheric level. The sexy vibe and those high notes pushed me over the edge and I still haven't recovered. I love every second of him on Idol and especially his face and reactions to the judges comments. Never arrogant, attentive and often good natured chuckles! I get tingly every time I see these videos. Love to see the judges reactions and mentors take on Adam too. He is one of a kind and no one will ever come close to his unique package. His personality is like fine Corinthian leather, luxuriant, supple, mysterious and top of the line! (Glitter and glam are on hiatus with Adam for awhile until he gets bored with leather! haha} Pools of glitter were much easier to describe! funbunn40
