FOX is considering an all ‘American Idol Alumi’ Judges next year

American Idol may be getting a very different type of shake-up for next season: Vulture reports (via a tipster with “knowledge of the situation”) that producers are considering replacing at least one, if not all of the judges. with former contestants. Reportedly, Kelly Clarkson (amazing) and Jennifer Hudson (amazing) have already been approached, and Adam Lambert and Clay Aiken are also being considered.

Wow! I've been gone for four days and I've just come back to so much new Adam news! Can't even beging to respond to all the new threads but I've read them all. I think AI alums as judges is a good idea. I prefer some over others, of course, but to me Adam is a no-brainer. In fact, he could be the PERMANENT judge and the other alums could just rotate in and out. LOL! I have a feeling that the AI bosses will have alums on. After all, they are the ones that the audience tuned in to see int he first place!

Nice to be home!

I'm waiting the hear that Adam has been upgraded to 'approached' instead of 'considered'.

Good to see you back DRG. Jump in everywhere. ;)

Can someone tell me what's the deal with this Bridger guy (no idea about last name)? Where did the talks about him being Adam's new bf come from?

Anonymous said...

I don't know if I can go through these idol speculations again with Adam! I know he said he wants it, so I hope he gets to be a judge. America would see what an awesome smart witty person he is. Don't think it could hurt his career. Just don't like how he was strung along last time. Hope AI makes a quicker decision this time around.

Anonymous said...

No one should be saying Bridger is Adam's bf. He was seen in a pic with him at Evita, and they went to the Young Hollywood party together. I think that's all.

Anonymous said...

Please no Clay Aiken! Kelly J Hud and Adam would be amazing for sure!

Shaley said...

Having alums as judges is a fabulous idea IMO, but I REFUSE to get my hopes up once again. There were a lot of "reliable" sources last time, and you know how that panned out. I will only believe it when it comes directly from the horse's (or should I say Stud's ;) mouth.

Anonymous said...

Idol would be a big boost to Adam's career but it's also very likely to not happen.

Anonymous said...

Bad Idea!

Anonymous said...

Lol having only alums as judges is a terrible idea. One alum as a mentor or panelist is fine, especially Kelly Clarkson would be great.

Anonymous said...

Well, they better not put Adam and Clay A. together. They do NOT like each other at all. Won't get excited yet tho, since we'll probably have to go thru a long time of speculation before anything is announced ... again.

Anonymous said...

no to clay aiken ps dont like hudson just adam and kelly-i like .

Anonymous said...

If the panel was Kelly, JHud and Clay I think that would probably be the most depressing thing to have happened to this fandom.

Shaley said...

Why do you think some alums would be a bad idea? I think having a split panel with two alums and two established "veterans" would give a good balanced panel. The vets know all the angles and the alums have been through the Idol process and would be able to give advice based on their experiences.
But hey-what do I know? I'm just a fan and know nothing about the music biz process.
(And admittingly a bit bias when it comes to Adam).

Shaley said...

I do agree with NO Clay. I watched him on Celebrity Apprentice and he came off as an arrogant diva *ssh*le.
But that seems to be what Idol goes for. Seems they always need one in the bunch.

Shaley said...

I just went back and read the headline to this thread. I missed the "all" alum word in there somehow. No wonder everyone's reactions are what they are! I just don't see that happening, tho. But with Idol, who knows. I'm sure at this point they're grasping at straws to find a formula to save them. I'm still going to just sit back and see what happens. I mainly want it for Adam because he seems to want it so badly (and there may be just a tad of selfishness on my part also):)

Anonymous said...

Clay was the one who said Adam made "his ears bleed". Rude! Then Adam, when asked something about Clay, said he couldn't find anything good to say about him. Ha! Anyway, I'll just wait to see how all this plays out .... I just know that I would watch every episode of AI if Adam were on, but I'm just not sure if that's a good move for him. But, if Adam wants it, then I sure hope he gets the opportunity!

Anonymous said...

@anon2:20pm

I remember those 2 incidents you are referring to between Adam and Clay. Adam is so gracious and gentlemanly I'm sure he'd make it work if it came down to it.

I'm not getting my hopes up this time with all the speculation about Adam's shot at becoming a judge. I was soo upset how AI kept him hanging last season I couldn't bear it if they did it again to him. If Adam himse of announces something then I'll believe it.

CT

Anonymous said...

Oops...that should be "if Adam himself announces"

Anonymous said...

Just to add: I'd love to see Adam as the ONLY Idol alum on the panel, of course. But if another one is added, I sure as heck don't want Clay. He and Adam do not like each other and shouldn't have to fake it. I think one Idol alum and two other judges: a top current music radio personality and then someone else high in the music business. The judges don't all have to be singers. Frankly, I dope dear Adam is not appearing too eager. I'd hate for him to be passed over again. Lots of media is buzzing about him, though. If AI does go with the AI alum judge idea, I can't imagine they wouldn't include him.

DRG (here we go again!)

Anonymous said...

All I want from American Idol are knowledgeable judges who aren't afraid to actually judge and who aren't having their strings pulled by producers in their ear. Judges that wont just say "that was bad" or "that was good" but actually offer insight and useful, non-platitudinous, explications about their reasoning. That's all I want. If Adam can do that, then give him the job.

Anonymous said...

It's funny that JHud is being mentioned. She really dissed AI not long ago. Guess she'll be forgiven. Adam has been nothing but gracious about the show. I'm simply not interested in the show unless Adam is on it. It's my only reason for watching.

Anonymous said...

I, for one, am not getting my hopes up..was too disappointed last time..AI is crazy as hell tho if they don't offer Adam the job..

Anonymous said...

First of all, Adam was jacked around by AI last year. Can't believe he still wants to do it. He holds no grudges for sure. It would be good for his career to get his music out more. And he would be perfect. They need likeable people and Adam is likeable, smart, humble and honest. Kelly would be fine too. But Jennifer Hudson is an egomaniac and unlikable and Clay Aiken is the same. AI is a sinking ship anyway so unless Adam is the judge and JH and CA are not on it, it is sunk for sure. JH cares about JH. There is bad blood between CA and Adam so really...let's be real. This is all speculation. They need Adam, a producer and someone else. We don't need it to be about the judges like this year's debacle. Adam is the best thing to come out of AI. He can bring it back too.

Anonymous said...

Please give Adam and Angie's Titanium duet some views on you tube. It's over 400,000 let's get it to half a million by tomorrow!

daydreamin said...

I tend to agree woh the comments about JH & CA. When I was at the finale JH could not get off the stage fast enough. It really appeared she wanted to get off in a hurry. CA yea...bad blood but probably mostly one sided. CA seems rather immature IMO.

Anonymous said...

I feel AI actually want Adam on as judge except he is too polarizing.
I'm thinking that AI put this news "all AI alum as judges" so as not to discourage or lose viewers who are not fans of Adam threatening not to watch because he will just be one of the alum judges.
It would look something of a fair play somehow. The fact that AI had Adam graced the AI finale means he is really in their good graces except he is too polarizing.
By putting it out there that Adam is only one of them judges, it will appease those who do not like the idea of having him as judge even last year's news.
Just saying . . .

Shady said...

Like last time, we have no idea what is really going on behind the scenes or who these "reliable sources" are. So we have no reason to say they jerked Adam around last time as we were not in on any meetings or negotiations.

No harm for Adam to appear eager for the job. Who would you rather hire, someone excited and positive about your brand or somebody iffy about it? Adam can still negotiate a decent fee regardless of how excited he appears in public.

I agree with Shaley, I think a split panel of former contestants and industry pros would be better. I'd love to see Michael Slezak of TVLine on the panel with Adam. But it's not up to me so I'll just wait and see what happens.

Anonymous said...

AI has tried to staunch the viewership flow--trying out the star, diva, non-industry routes, but the blood kept draining. Let's analyze this: What distinguishes AI from all the other singing reality shows is that it actually produces stars. Chalk it up to luck, one might guess, but there are just too many of them to attribute it to this. What AI does that the others don't is that it gives a lot of face time to the contestants, such that the audience grows to love them and really care. The others make the judges the focus, whereas in AI, there is a better balance between the two. More so in Adam's time than any other, and look how so much more of the second tier alums are even more popular than the winners of the other shows. AI's formula of being a platform and a springboard for its contestants is something the others can only begin to imitate.
When AI started to lose the nice balance between contestants and judges, and the chemistry among the contestants and among the judges waned, the show started to lose its chemistry with its viewers. This dynamic also explains the attraction of the Voice, and to a lesser extent, X Factor. People started to feel the show's chemistry, even if it came from the judges.

So now Fox is considering AI alums for judges. As far as the ones being discussed, JH, KC and CA have
yet to prove to be the quick-witted, scintillating, intelligent, music knowledgeable, supportive, and technically trained professional rolled in one that Adam has proved himself over and over. In addition, Adam has theater background and songwriting and on and on. They each have their individual strengths, but none have the "whole package" aspect of Adam.

As much as Adam is heart and head above the others in qualifications, he's also the least likely to be tapped. Fox's business model of using only true artists and not alums as judges was implied as a convenient argument for not hiring Adam. As time goes by, avoiding the Adam "elephant in the room" when he made the most sense as judge can no longer used as gambit. That model has not been working for them, but in fact has hurt them. With a tighter budget, they can no longer not consider the AI alums, which includes Adam. Adam is smart to put himself out there and not be coy about his interest because in this power struggle (as this is what it is), he cannot lose. If he doesn't get the gig, the discussion surrounding his suitability will have improved his brand and increases name exposure; and if he does, Adam gets what he wants and benefits in all the ways he can.

In the long run, the AI game plan must pursue the path of economics. Because of Adam's growing visibility and popularity, public perception of gays and gay marriage, and the potential for Idol's franchise expanding because of Adam, (China Idol, for example), time is on Adam's side, the tipping point is beginning to lean in his direction.

Adam has always been perceived as powerful, and his power is threatening to the Suits who are repelled by his sexuality and orientation. No other male alum comes close, not CA nor anyone else compare. The fear of a powerful Adam, now a celebrated figure in LGBTQ human rights and global star, influencing people to follow him like the Pied Piper has to be weighed against the equal fear that AI viewership would continue its decline.

Viewer attrition aided by a backlash against ignoring the Adam elephant or a plague on the morality of a nation?
As public perception moves toward acceptance of gays and homosexuality, and more people clamor for "made for AI" Adam, the decision becomes more obvious. In the end Fox will decide that survival trumps morality. If they go bold and hire Adam, this just might earn them a place in the pantheon of society's evolution for the better--the change we keep talking about as coming. atm

Last time around Adam himself said that he (management I assume) was in talks with AI and was nervous about whether or not he was going to get the job or not. So if was nervous about if he may get it, I would assume something was going on.

Anonymous said...

Kelly Clarkson was approached last year, she didn't want it. said she was not qualified to judge other people, also had her own career to worry about. They might find someone who is actually owns a recording business.

me said...

atm, your argument about other past contestants does not hold true for Jennifer Hudson. She does write her own music, she has a Grammy for her first album and she won an Academy Award and many other awards for her role in Dream Girls. Additionally she has the public's sympathy for how she held up under the tragedy of the murders of her mother and other family members. She is a role model with her success with weight Watchers. She is one of America's sweethearts.

And this argument is just bullshit: "Adam has always been perceived as powerful, and his power is threatening to the Suits who are repelled by his sexuality and orientation." Way to paint everybody with the same paintbrush.

Shady said...

5:03, Adam let us know something was going on but that is all he said. He is under no obligation to tell us what the negotiations were or when and where they ended. We have no idea what really happened so people shouldn't be saying what Idol did to Adam. And it isn't any of our business anyhow. If Adam wanted us to know he would tell us.

It would be overwhelming for the "country" viewers if Clay and Adam were on the panel. Just as this past year was known by some as 3 blacks and a white, CA and AL would be the gay dudes and whoever. Speculation would abound about their relationship which would be nauseating to me.

Said going back three judges, and idol alum. If corse guess all rumors, catch rerun if you want. Also DWTS ratings down going to one night two judges leaving the guys, and several pro dancer's., DH doing a show with his sister. If Idol would ever pick CA over AL they really have lost it. That's my opinion I cannot stand CA. Sue

I feel having an all AI-alumni judge panel is not exactly a good idea because their choices at the final auditions as well as their eventual critiques on the show may overlap one another; not absolutely sure about this though since it has not been tested. Another point regarding this approach of having a complete AI-alumni panel is...they may have won many outstanding awards, but mentoring and critiquing are whole different skills; so need to bear that in mind, are they up to it. I can't say for sure if KC, JH or CA can deliver sound critiques or are good mentors/judges; can't tell because I don't follow them. If they were, how is it that Adam seems to be invited back on AI to do mentoring / critiquing more times than the other three put together. A diverse panel will more likely make the judges panel more palatable and inviting to the audience, if ratings is a top criterion. How about one judge who is an expert in the field of teaching, mentoring and critiquing...an authentic music / singing critic / teacher, who may not be a star, but really knows his/her field of expertise. We as the audience not only want to listen to good singing/music but also would like to learn something from it. Well everyone can see who this most suitable person is...Adam. So Adam, another expert/teacher/critic, also one from the recording music industry and another big-name superstar to rake in ratings, are my choices.

Lam-my

Anonymous said...

that's one thing I liked about KU I thought he knew alot about music and his critques were fascinating so were MC but she dragged it out too long.

Anonymous said...

So far, most of the AI judges / mentors go for general critiques; the only person who did some amount of detailed teaching / mentoring is Adam; not just verbally, but followed up with concrete actions. The top-most example is the way Adam allowed Angie to really take her maiden flight into stardom; now the rest is up to her but he gave her an upper-edge boost. I remember clearly how he mentored the S9 group...like even critiquing their emotions and facial expressions while delivering a song, apart from voice and tones etc. And not forgetting all the unique arrangements of covers; this, Adam attributed to Michael Orland's genius ; somehow I think he too had a lot to do with it. Michael Orland, Angie and Adam, make a formidable trio. So does that mean Adam is better off as a mentor...he should be a chief judge because he can apply all his other talents to a broader, larger arena. In any case, I think Adam cracked open the huge China door for AI to make a smooth entry into a formidable market. AI, now the tables are slightly turned in Adam's favour; recognise it.

All these industry talk I really don't get it. Simon Cowell wasn,'t in the industry when the show started in 2002. He just blabbered shits to contestants and viewers loved it. Seacrest was second hand DJ on one of LA's radio station. Initially the only star of the show was Paula Abdul with multi-platnium records under her belt. We all know how the media ripped her into pieces saying that she was drunk or something coming to the show. The only ones came mega super stars of AI are Cowell, Seacrest, and maybe Randy. Won't say anything about the producers and executives cause that's a different argument all by itself.

Now back to Adam. Adam creates buzz like no other. Forget about how many records he sold or not sold compare to other alumni finalist. All the ones who sold more than Adam are like Paula. Even the heavy mega stars like Mariah who came shorter than Paula. Again Adam creates buzz. He knows how to talk. He fucking saved his own gorgeous ass from that AMA buzz (I call it buzz cause I loved that performance where others didn't). I personally see him better than Cowell. Adam is funny, smart, articulate, etc. beside his out of this world voice, looks, fashion, etc.

AI would be a fool by not hiring Adam. Come on AI what a f**ck are you waiting for!?

Anonymous said...

9:00pm. Maybe if AI was on NBC without ant hesitation they would have hired Adam.

Anonymous said...

11:41, Simon Cowell had twenty years experience in the record industry before being a judge on Pop Idol in the UK and then later on American Idol. You apparently have no idea how huge and influential he is in the industry. Might be wise to check your facts before blabbering your own shit.

Well said. Simon had a wealth of experience in the music world before he was a judge on American Idol. Furthermore, he didn't speak a load of shit every week. He was HONEST and the American Idol judging needs a truckload of honesty.

Anonymous said...

Has Clay Aiken had a facelift? He looked as though he had when he was on AI this year.

Anonymous said...

Kelly is the key contestant. As a big hitter in the industry, she gives the panel credibility. J-HUD is next for all the reasons 5:16 gave. After that it could easily be Clay or Adam. Both have strong points going for them but Adam has a bit of a better working relationship with Idol - he has always been positive about the show. He watches it regularly and comments on the performances. Plus the Chinese Idol stint.

There is an outside chance that Clay is their second choice for the Kelly spot, especially if they want someone from the show's beginnings. The final judge selection will depend on chemistry. Best not to suggest that Adam can't work with anyone. JMO.

Anonymous said...

CA has become totally snarky and the way he treated Adam when he was on AI was unforgivable! He showed how jealous he was of an AI contestant! He could never be a judge! ADAM - YES! YES! Yes! CA - NO, NO, NO! nancdruuu2

Most of the comments here want to see Adam on Idol as a new judge. Of course, we are the ones who have been fans since we first saw him on Idol so why wouldn't we want to see him on the show? He has all the qualities that would make him the perffect choice. But as in the past, we shouldn't get ourselves worked up into a frenzy because even though Adam has expressed a desire to be a judge, it may just not happen for so many reasons that we will never know. I hope a decision is made soon so we are not left speculating about it. And Adam has to work on his third album which might just be more important to him at this point in his career.

Anonymous said...

Didn't somebody say earlier two past contestant judges and two industry judges? That still sound like a better idea to me. All former contestants won't draw new viewers. So something like Adam, Kelly Clarkson or JHud, Michael Slezak and a big name draw like Adele or Katy Perry or Bruno Mars.

Anonymous said...

Yes to Adam but oh no to Clay Aiken. He comes across as very precious. Furthermore, I think one Idol alum would be sufficient and if it's not Adam, then Kelly is the obvious choice.
