Tommy Joe Ratliff Talks Adam Lambert In New Interview with American Blues Scene

"Well ya can’t have a voice like Adam’s and not have a feeling for the blues. He’s totally about soul and funk, so he definitely get the blues. Thats what worked so well when I auditioned, I guess, is that we both have a very similar feel and, at the same time, we’re both really into make up and the glam rock. It’s going to be 4 years in October and it’s still pretty damn surreal to me and still my main priority! I was originally on bass with him. He wanted more funk and blues so he switched me over to guitar. His next album is going to be a lot more rock, which I’m super excited about."

I Really like this interview with Tommy. It's interesting to hear about the musical connection between him and Adam. Sounds like lots of love and respect. Artists need people around them that Get them and have their back. I think Tommy is a true friend, as is Adam.

Hey Tommy, long time no hear. I actually like your solo acoustic guitar when you accompany Adam. You follow his voice so closely so your guitar play does not interfere with Adam's voice/singing. Yes a close friend is important like you and Adam have each other's back...moreover you play piano and he might need that sometimes. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

Great interview!Nice to hear about music stuff for a change.

love Tommy.

Always liked Tommy's sound. You can really hear the blues when he does his solo with Adam.

Anonymous said...

Is he a good guitarist in US?

Anonymous said...

Australian fans loves Tommy. Great friend of Adams and one heck of a talented guy.

For music business purposes Adam and Tommy Joe are the perfect looking COUPLE out there and were that from the get go!!!
Both so ready to throw themselves into "IT" as rockers should be! Wonderful chemistry and both SOOOO photogenic!!!
Just wanted to say this, please do not twist my liking this 'duo' to anything else, I just think that ROCKWISE they look exceptionally good together.

Anonymous said...

3:30 yes agree. Great on stage chemistry

Anonymous said...

Now, you are not going to like this but Tommy is way too phlegmatic on stage and his wishful stage presence is a pain to look at.

As a guitarist, well, he certainly isn't the best of the best. I know Adam and Tommy are friends and that's just great but it shouldn't be the main reason when you are hiring somebody.

Brian and the various drummers we've seen so far have all been great and lively whereas Tommy and Ashley are pretty to look at but as performers and musicians they are very very mediocre.

I mean if Adam is heading for the top he should drop the ballast asap. It is getting late, you know.

The true, genuine friendship and mutual respect for each others talent really shines through. Love them both! Love that Tommy has never shied away from being close to Adam. I think he is a very open minded and accepting person. I love that he accepts and loves Adam for Adam. Anyone who is loyal to Adam is more than ok in my book.

Anonymous said...

Tommy is such a great Adam supporter. His skills are really improving, and it doesn' hurt that he's really cute.

Anonymous said...

Great words from a cool dude.just not a very good guitarist#
Miss adam's first band! Took my late grannie to one of his shows during his glamnation tour. She looked at me and said 'now this is music!'.she was a guitarist and had good words for adam's guitarists(seriously forgot his name now.I swear!).
Tommy sounds really appreciative of adam, that's cool

Anonymous said...

I don't think that Tommy's performance was any good.
Their friendship is OK ,but outside the stage.

Anonymous said...

I never gave much attention to Tommy, but feel like I learned a lot about him in this interview. He's doing what he loves and loves what he's doing. He's a very chatty person, him and Adam must have a hard time getting in a word with each other (lol). It's all good.

I don't know much about Tommy or Ashley as guitarists, but on stage they often look bored and listless. Tommy and Adam's interactions now seem to be forced probably after all the comments about their kissing, movements, etc. during some of his concert shows. Adam seems to be more relaxed and comfortable on stage and does just fine adding some of his sexy dance moves as he performs. I thought Monte was terrific but whatever happened there ended his friendship and working with Adam. I don't miss the backup singers or the dancers and whenever Adam performs at other venues with replacement band members, they always do well. I guess he will keep Tommy since they are friends and he will grow as a guitarist along with Adam if he intends to use him for the third album and concerts that will follow.

Ratliff and Lambert have a magic. it is like a Plant and Page and Tyler and Perry type of thing. He seemed fate played a role in the meeting. Ratliff had never watched AI before his audition with Adam. I hope they cont. making great music for many years.

Anonymous said...

spelling error: It seemed fate not He seemed fate. oooops

Anonymous said...

I don't like the back up dancers and singers, but I can see their benefit to the front man.

Anonymous said...

I guess I need to consult my optician since I can't see the magic you are referring to.

But I do see some magic between Brian and Adam so I can't be totally blind, can I?

Anonymous said...

It's not Tommy's or Ashley's job to be an equal stage presence to Adam. They are there to play for him. They are busy PLAYING their instruments onstage, and they do a fine job, IMO. Some posters here seem to have a lot more expertise on guitar-playing skills than I do. I guess you are experienced players yourself. I think Tommy is a very good guitarist. His solos are fantastic! Adam has occasional interaction with Tommy and Ashley onstage, just enough to make it fun. I don't think either T or Ashl. look bored at all. They're doing their jobs. I know some bands have members who really move around a lot and jump around, etc., and I like that, too. But until Adam changes it up again, I think his band is fine. I thought the interview with Tommy was very enlightening and he praised Adam very well. They are friends, but they are also soulmates when it comes to music.

Haha ok I know you are trolling. Good one

Anonymous said...

Adam doesn't have new music so he doesn't need his own band. Who knows if and when he will. He isn't an indie artist capable of putting out his own cd. I think it's more likely he will just move on to theater

keep on trolling... bye bye..........

I miss Isaac! He was always such a sunny person and lived in the moment. And Adam's radio-tour gigs with Kevin Hastings (?) were good too. I liked Kevin. Tommy is a lovely person and I like him but he is a bit boring on stage (as someone said). I don't need any kisses or sexy moves between Adam and Tommy. But I would be happy if he showed a little bit joy of playing on stage. But I must admit he has gotten better little by little.

So, what was he doing in NY for many days in that studio with Nile and Avicii if not new music? I believe he is preparing his own music now + in future some music-related TV-work (after Glee also).

Anonymous said...

He was a guest vocalist on niles record. That's not his music.

Anonymous said...

Yay! Monte pittman
Now I remember,

Anonymous said...

Hmmm..so why are you here?

Anonymous said...

I don't think I have been so crazy and supportive to any artist,as I am to Adam(except beyonce).I still don't understand why I get the vibe that tommy is a sneaky person, adam seems like an intelligent person SO I know that he would be extra careful of some 'friends'.I sincerely pray that his next tour(I believe there would be) will be bigger and better!
And please God,no onstage kiss

Anonymous said...

If his vocals are on it like Lay Me Down he gonna get some credit for that music. Three more songs made you do not know one or so was not his. He said he working on new music for himself also and he is. Anytime his vocals on a song and he writes on it it's partly his music, if you do not know that you know nothing. If its Avincii music then his vocals are for sure all over it because he not any kind if good singer but great DJ. NR, AlL and Avincii magic add a little mystery S.

Anonymous said...

Adam was not even in the studio with them on the third day. It was just nile, avicii and mystery skulls. The mystery skulls guy is a singer. So adam did one or two songs for nile.

...They are busy PLAYING their instruments onstage...

Exactly, but good musicians are NOT busy playing their instruments, they are able to interact with the audience WHILE they play and they can adapt to everything else that is going on around them. Many of the good ones are also able to fool around and have some fun, too. Like Brian, for instance.

Anonymous said...

Adam not going in the Theatre right now so give it up. He got Glee Vegas will both lead to new opportunities. He got friends in high places he knows who backing his music will tell us in time. You are a professional troll so could you go somewhere else. Anytime you do all the vocals it's partly your and co write. Just ask Rhianna. You were not in the studio so you do not know who's song was who's.

Anonymous said...

speaking up Glee what's the skinny relating to Adam? I haven't read anything lately about Glee.

Anonymous said...

I enjoy watching all the members of the band but I rarely do. I mostly just watch Adam on stage.

Anonymous said...

This is rather early in the day for the dregs to appear. Sad.

Anonymous said...

I think the discussion of Tommy's blandness has been done to death.

Anonymous said...

I've seen a slew of bands in my time. Some of the best ones have a frontman and a band that pretty much just plays their instruments. Works fine for lot of good bands. e
Every bandmember doesn't have to be a big showman.

Next album more Rock'n'Roll?
Bring it on!!
As Randy said after Adam's performance of Arrowsmith's Cryin' - "Rock and Roll, Baby!" Re-live the moment here:

If you would stop being so desperately over invested in believing adam is a huge star then you could actually just enjoy following him. He seems happy. It's great he gets to sing on niles and aviciis albums.

Adam will not go back to theatre, unless the cockroaches have found his condo, and that is a very remote chance. When and if Adam needs a band again, I hope he can afford a great guitarist , and not an upstart like Tommy. I love that Adam goes to all these shows, in NY and elsewhere, I am sure he is soaking up every bit of them to see what is successful, and what is not. As his name gets out there a bit better possibly thru Glee and Queen in Vegas, musicians will want to be part of his band. He needs to spend a little less on clothes, and put that money to some good musicians. Although I am thrilled as he must be, that he can now afford nice clothes, and he has shown pretty good taste in them. I still don't think he really needs dancers, usually the stage isn't quite big enough any way. I sincerely hope he doesn't go back to the old glam and heavy make up again, as Tommy suggested.
He has moved forward now, and his audiences, seem to like the more casual look, no matter what he wears, pop, or rock, it's the songs and his voice they come out for.

This idea that theater is beneath him is pretty hilarious. He would be very lucky if he could get a broadway show. It would be a big boost for his career. Fantasia is starring in a new broadway show this fall. Jordin sparks has been on broadway. Both of them still are making albums with rca, unlike adam.

Anonymous said...

Anon 10:24
Your way of thinking is too 'narrow'! Adam already now has a great international following. He is an international STAR and much more appreciated and accepted outside US (sad to say)!
It would be a total shame and a great loss to "lose" him to however great a theater or a Broadway show!!! And way too early in his career to be thinking like that...

Anonymous said...

That is just not true that adam is a big star in any major music market. The money made there was obviously not sufficient for him to keep his record deal with Sony.

Anonymous said...

@10:24
Theatre is definitely, not beneath Adam, that was never said. He has done a lot of theatre, and he got bored with it, and wanted to spread his wings. Yes if he was offered a starring part on Broadway, It might be tempting, but right now he could not fit it into his schedule for maybe a couple of years. The best part of going to Vegas with Queen, and being on Glee, is that he will have a new audience, who might be hearing him for the first time, because they are not necessarily watching to see Adam, but watching or paying for some other favorite singers, and he just happens to be part of it. It's a huge, really huge, opportunity for him to get his name out there.

Anonymous said...

I don't think the queen gig is huge or going to do anything for his career. The glee role could be good but right now it's a total mystery how big of a role he will have, how many episodes, will he be good at it. I am hopeful glee will help him.

And doing a run on broadway is not forever. It can just be a couple months. Certainly he seems to have plenty of time

Anonymous said...

Fantasia and Jordin are just fine. They are mainstream, non-controversial and have no rough edges. I'm glad they are doing acting. Adam is a whole different story, as we all know. We've all said at various times that following Adam is a bumpy ride, but it's never boring. I like rooting for the talented, beautiful underdog.

I don't think that appearing in a Broadway show is beneath Adam right now. Yet if the right part were offered to him for a short run, who is to say he might not be interested in it? As far as this concert in Vegas with Queen, it could bring Adam new fans in the audience there. And his role on Glee(whatever it happens to be) will also bring in new viewers interested in him and his music. We will just have to wait and see what the future holds for Adam, but there seem to be several very good opportunities there for him and his career.

Anonymous said...

DRG

Lol I would say Fantasia is the very bumpiest of rides including a well publicized suicide attempt.

Anonymous said...

Regarding Adam and Glee. I read that he will be Chris Coffer's nemesis as well as having a singing role with Demi Lovato. I guess we'll have to wait and see for sure...nancdruuu2

@11:38AM You can ignore this thread if you don't like it. It's not hard to do.

I like Tommy. He isn't greatest guitarist. But he is good. He got approval from Brian May for his skills and that's a lot. I miss Isaac. He is one good drummer.

Anonymous said...

@12:20PM so long as you compare, you'll be never satisfied with whatever Adam does. Do yourself a favor and change your attitude. Seems you didn't have a great childhood and your parents compared you to others all the time. This can be fixed with few sessions with a psychologist.

Adam is doing great and he is got things up his sleeves that we don't know. We found out about his VMA a day before the show. I'm sure he is got similar things that we don't know anything about.

Justin Bieber manager, Scooter Braun declined an offer to join the American Idol 13 judges panel.

They should have Adam and JHud. Idol should keep judges critiques very short and sweet and increase contestants' performance time. That's what a lot of viewers want. IMO 90 seconds of performance with five minutes of critiques from judges to mentor to host is just too much. Keep the back stories short and sweet too. People want great performances. Not too much talk.

Just a reminder: the owner/administrator of this blog is the one who decides what is posted here. Anything that mentions Adam in a positive and informative way is more than fine with me. If a thread/picture/article doesn't appeal to you, simply skip it. We owe many thanks to Admin for keeping us up to date with the latest Adam Lambert news, not complaints.

Re Tommy: he's always been a nice guy the times I've been around him, he's loyal to Adam, his guitar skills continue to evolve, and I've seen him smile many times on stage..that is when I can take my eyes off of Adam for a second or two. I've never understood the hate directed toward him, and I've been around since the beginning. Great interview and I join those who are excited for Adam's next direction in music, with more rock.. But seriously, I'm just excited for new music period!! And yes, you doubters, there will be new music.

Re Broadway: Adam has said he'd like to do that....someday. And I have to say, I'll be first in line, but for now, looking forward to iHeart with Adam and Queen, Glee, and whatever else is happening that we don't know about yet...surprises to come for sure!!

Didn't someone say that Adam was called to VMA's at the very last moment b/c someone else had to cancel? Or was this just a rumor? If it's so, we could not find it out earlier.

Tommy shows as a good friend to Adam.
I just wish he and Ashley have more stage presence and interaction with Adam.
Is smiling hard for them to do?
Truly cannot understand how they can just have poker faces while accompanying Adam who is such an exuberant personality?
