BILLBOARD: 'TOH' DEBUTS AT #3 ON TOP 200 WITH 47k UNITS (UPDATED)

Filed Under () by broddybounce on Wednesday, June 24, 2015

Posted at : Wednesday, June 24, 2015

Billboard has reported in a story by its Co-Director of Charts, Keith Caulfield, that TOH debuts at #3 on the Billboard 200.  This is with 47k units (sales + streaming), higher than earlier estimates.  Although we're providing the link to the chart below, as of the time of this writing it has yet to be updated with this week's information.

As you'll see in the quote below, Caulfield writes "second-highest bow," despite the album charting at #3.  What he is referring to is the fact that TOH has the second-highest album debut on the chart after James Taylor's new album, but is below Taylor Swift's 1989 because that has already been charting for many weeks but is still having enough sales & streaming to put it at #2 this week.
"Adam Lambert notches the chart’s second-highest bow, as his third album The Original High arrives at No. 3 with 47,000 units."

___________

We earlier posted a tweet from @WarnerBrosPromo about TOH debuting at #2 on the "US Album Chart"...
We have since discovered that this wasn't referring to the higher profile Billboard 200 chart but to another one called Top Album Sales, which excludes streaming.  The link to that chart can be found below, however it is still not updated as of the time of this writing:

Two good stories to clarify all of this may be found at Adam Lambert 411 (requestadamlambert.com) which has updated its story from yesterday from "estimated" to "official," and Headline Planet (which includes a cool pic of Adam in his "GMA wheels"):

Congratulations Adam! JOB WELL DONE! i am very pleased and excited with TOH album because i like the melodies of most of the songs there. TOH is definitely my favorite, very catchy for me and i love the groove. But that doesn't mean that i don't like the rest because the entire album is simply my kind of music. That is why i am very satisfied and i just love it.

Regards to everyone.

Love thru Adam,

Well Billboard says Adam notches the second highest bow. I don't think WBR was wrong. Adam got the second spot in sales. But not in sales/streaming.

Yay aleast hes in the top 5 congrats adam!!

Glamberts Good Job! We did it!

I bought TOH on ITunes, but got my cd from Amazon yesterday. While most cd's other than Adam's that I play may have 1 or 2 songs that I listen to...that is never the case with any of Adam's cd'd. The cd sounds soooo good on my player and I love Shame. There is not a song on there that is mediocre. THEY ARE ALL GOOD! His voice on this TOH is soooo sexy. I am hoping the people around the world will stream and buy TOH. Excellent Adam!

Congratulation on #3, Adam. WELL DONE!!

What place did Ghost Town get on the Billboard singles chart?

I hope The Original High is the next single.

@8:05, thanks for your comment, but I have an "administrative" question: is it not clear that I have put the link to the Billboard story within the post, or did you simply include the URL in your comment to emphasize your point?

I thought it was obvious, but if some readers don't realize that the enlarged & bolded "NAME OF PUBLICATION: TITLE OF ARTICLE" in posts (or, as in this post, "BILLBOARD 200 CHART STORY") is the actual clickable link to the story, let me know. Do we actually need to write something akin to "Link" or "Click Here" for clarification? Thanks!

I don't think people realize just how difficult it is to have three (3) albums in a row on the BILLBOARD 200 chart!!! It's an incredible feat that not many artists dream of but have not accomplished! HUGE CONGRATS to Adam Lambert, his new label Warner Bros Records and his full team!!

I personally believe that even more than his albums, it's Adam himself, through his voice, personality and incredible stage persona that brings so much happiness to millions of people worldwide. Just seeing his face on a poster, on television, on a magazine cover, anywhere really, brings up a smile right away. He has that addictive karma. Some artists come and go, but Adam Lambert has been continually reinventing himself and I, for one, love him for that. He is always looking to better his career by trying out new things, new sounds and new productions. For me, talent and integrity will ALWAYS surpass album sales. Yeah, album sales are great but it's when an artist touches your soul during a show that he/she proves that he/she really has made it and will have longevity. Adam Lambert is that artist/singer! Again, CONGRATS Adam!!

...second sentence should obivously read ....that MANY artists dream of but have NOT accomplished...

We failed Adam. Last album was number one but this time only number 3. Why ony 42K physical albums sold? Are there only 42K Glamberts in the USA or are they just not buying his music anymore. Sad for Adam :(

Anonymous said...

Congrats not many people can say all of their albums have debuted in the top three . We did not fail Adam he was only beaten by a legand and a SUPER Star. The music industry has changed a lot in the last 3 years. Why buy music when you can stream everything for free or ten dollars s month.

Anne Marie said...

How could anyone beat James Taylor, being a legend and putting out an album after 40 years, Even super star Swift couldn't, considering this IMO Adam came out on top. #3 position is a huge accomplishment, and I am so proud of him. I would imagine Adam is feeling very good about this too. Too bad JT didn't wait another month or two to debut his new album, but what is, is. Go down the list of artists that he did debut in front of. I feel like I did when he didn't win Idol, that in my mind he really did win, this to me gives me the same feeling. To place right next to TS, to me feels like he won it all.

CONGRATULATIONS ADAM!!! TOH is a great album, you should be very proud of yourself, you worked so hard !!

@8:57 AM

Excuse me; but dare I say, the statements in your post are nonsense, These wonderful results maybe sad for you; but not for Adam and his remarkable hard working fans. No one has failed Adam but you, representing yourself as so called fan! Try to understand this concept; ADAM CAME IN ON THE BILLBOARD CHARTS AT #3 behind Taylor Swift, possibly the biggest seller in the pop music business today; and she is bringing Country Western fans with her also. They were tied there for awhile. So if you call that failing; I just don't know what to tell you! 47K is fantastic!! This really shows the wonderful dedication of Adam Lambert's great loyal fan base.

CONGRATULATIONS GLAMBERTS!! Let's keep up the good work. Three albums, including TOH in the BB top 10, this is history making in itself.

Let's continue supporting this talented one in a billion Worldwide superstar, and never let the words of the Negative Nicks or Nellies of the world discourage us in any way! There are those who will never see the forest for the trees, because they just don't want to recognize any good things when it comes to Adam Lambert. "Don't let nobody turn you around" with words of despair. Let us continue to be steadfast sisters and brothers of Glam Nation, in our pursuit of helping the Glam One achieve, "The Original High" as one of the greatest entertainers in this sometimes "Mad World"! Onward and Upward we go in supporting our man with him leading the magical way!!!

Anonymous said...

A double AMEN to that; and all the wonderful supporting posts above.
CONGRATULATIONS ADAM and all supporting fan! WE DID GOOD. So great to get so many new fans along the way. Love, love, love The Original High Album, every song is an absolute gem! Can't stop listening and don't won't to. Just went out and bought 2 more; one for car; and one for my neighbor who heard it over the fence and peeked over while I was in the back yard playing it. She asked me who in the world is that singing. I told her and she said she remembered him from Idol, and did not really keep up with him, but she voted for him. She was raving so much about him that when I went out, I purchased her one too. She was thrilled and said that she will definitely start following him now. She also said that she was going to play the cd at a family gathering she was going. to and that there would be a lot of 20 and 30 year olds there.

So happy to reintroduce Adam to a prior Adam fan. Can't wait to hear what the people at her family gathering thought of Adam's music! Will post when I find out. so much fun!!!

Congratulations Adam. Well done!!!! Also to James Taylor for his first no 1. It would be nice if Adams constant support snd visibility of alternative life styles drove sales like Swift bashing Apple, but that's never going to happen the good old USA! Cheers Adam you rock!

Adam 1st week sales

FYE 198K
TP 77K
TOH 47K

can you see the trend here?

his next album will be lucky to get 25K 1st week.

how can any of you see these numbers as a good thing for Adam?

choons said...

Maybe he should release another single to get more attention - like Original High or Another Lonely Night. I think I remember Katy Perry released two or three singles before an album ... ?? maybe not. But much as I love Ghost Town I think it is a hard sell for mainstream radio and that would affect traffic checking out the whole album. Listeners might assume the rest of the tracks are going to be similar in style.
But there are so many other tracks that that are fabulous!

Anonymous said...

People listen music via web, not buying - that is the trend. Not musicians or singers fault.

Anonymous said...

@10:50 For the last time , the music industry has changed dramatically in the last 3 years!! Very few sell tons if albums when you can stream any song for FREE!!! Adam does need one huge hit.

Dee R Gee said...

The power of the mighty Glamberts! This should keep Adam on the spotlight !

Anonymous said...

He should release the ultimate dance track on TOH. Either Rumors or The Light. Another Lonely Night and Evil In The Night are neutral tracks and won't do much. Shame is another great track to release.

Dee R Gee said...

Oops got interrupted. Just hope his spot will sustain for a while. And YES, music buying has changed so much since FYE. All record sales are down for everyone. This is a fantastic accomplishment for Adam!

Anonymous said...

@10:50 & anyone in general:

Young listeners don't buy anymore--They stream for free or listen illegally. I know this--I'm in the early 20s demographic and see it all the time (Personally, I like to support artists I like since most of them are not mainstream & deserve more success. I can't afford much since I'm still a student, but I bought Adam's album twice since he's my #1 favorite. If I'm not sure about an artist, then I listen somewhere legally for free when possible). Because of digital technology, if they can't listen for free, they will always find a way around protections to listen to their music without paying. This mainly happens through file-sharing & youtube.

The only exception I've seen is with TSwift's team--They have been SUPER vigilant & hardcore in protecting her songs, esp. on places like youtube. I haven't noticed such tight security for any other artist--Even for tv and movies. You won't find a fan-made lyric video with her un-distorted soundtrack ANYWHERE for more than 15 min. They don't even allow people to use her music for non-profit as background music or in other creative forms (i.e. a dance)--Even though technically, this should be legal under Creative Commons laws. So basically, the only easy way to get a TSwift song is to actually buy or stream it. With no other easy options, this translated into sales. Her team has been very successful in funneling demand this way, but it takes an insane amount of legal control and constant vigilance. There is no way she would have as many sales or streams otherwise--Half that, maybe. But the general public doesn't realize this, and with excellent marketing, it's made out to look like she had instant, easy success. The reality is that there is much more going on behind the scenes. No other artist legally controls their music like her team does, so TSwift's case is really the exception in many ways. Adam's case can't be realistically compared to hers.

On top of this, only hardcore fanbases or the older demographics actually buy anymore. This is why James Taylor came way out on top--Even on top of Swift, by double. This is why genres like country have more actual sales--They target both younger and older demographics. Pop is mainly ALL the younger demographic. With major changes in digital tech & demographics, the music biz as a whole is struggling (Unless some gigantic legal or digital security advances are made--which probably won't happen for another decade--The trend will just keep going down)--You have to take that into account.

That said, I never expected Adam to get more sales than TP--He's been totally out of the mainstream public eye since then, touring with Queen, working out a new label, & working on his album. Most people who are casual fans probably don't even know he has a new album (It's these people and new fans who make pop artists a success these days). In this respect, I've seen the solo-pop career situation as Adam starting his career over--WB knows this too, I suspect. So they won't be looking for a quick burn-out instant success or TSwift easy sure-fire success, but instead they will be trying to re-build anew over the long-term.

If you're expecting Taylor Swift levels of success, then you're being unrealistic and your perspective of what success means in the industry has probably been skewed by her teams strategy and all the press. Considering all this, yes--This is a success. Not a huge bang--That's unrealistic--But for where he is right now, yes a success.

...That turned out to be way longer than I intended, but I thought things needed to be put into perspective for this discussion. Hope it's useful.

@10:59 why would he release another single, when ghost town has not even charted yet.It take months sometimes for a single to get radio play on less your taylor swift or katy perry. Patience is virtue.

47k is good people.Albums sales overall are down.Lets work on making ghost town number 1

Anonymous said...

Well we all know with streaming, spotify, and shazam, the competition in album sales is tremendous. There are MORE albums dropped and so sales get divided among 4 or 5 really strong albums. If you read the article, there are tons of great artists and bands who never make #1 even with the old rules. Sustaining the sales will be the most difficult for his album. And 12:35 is absolutely right about the time it takes for a single to rise up in just the top 40. The cycle takes a while for the popular ones to fade back out to let the new ones in. Tove Lo was charting in Sweden after two months release, but never hit the US top 20 till 4 months later. Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith both have similar experiences to getting to the top. This album is too good to be ignored. Just keep streaming and encouraging friends and family to do the same!!!!

Anonymous said...

This is actually VERY GOOD in today's music industry.

The Dark Side said...

TS huge sales amazes me but I think your post puts it into perspective. She's more a business than an artist. Her focus is on selling her product and marketing her brand and all obstacles in the way are eliminated. It's easier to understand her success over far superior artists.

Anonymous said...

I think from all the promos, fans expected sales to be much bigger than Trespassing first week sales of 77K. Albums are still selling. One American Idol reject is projected to sell over 70K on her first album release next week. I streamed her album and nothing new. Her voice is just alright and her album isn't a top notch produced album.

Anonymous said...

people dont buy cds anymore

Anonymous said...

Even if you make the argument that no one buys CDs and it's all streaming now. Look at Adam's streaming numbers. Only 5K stream equivalent album sales. So the belief that everyone is streaming Adam's album instead of buying physical CDs it is completely false.

Anonymous said...

@1:50 You do realise that is 7.5 million views in a week.

Anonymous said...

One thing is for sure Adam's team sure knows when to debute the albums for high placement. A week earlier or later it would have come in much lower. But he has a number 3 album this week. Yeah Adam and team.

Anonymous said...

2:59, if it was released this week, TOH would still be a top 5 album.

Anonymous said...

For all the talk of Adam has older fans, that didn't show up in CD sales. I bought 4. How many other fans bought multiple copies? As for young people stream, Adam doesn't have high streaming numbers. Adam has lost a lot of fans over the past three years. Hopefully they will rediscover Adam with all the publicity Adam is getting. Hopefully all the things we do as fans to help radio play will make a difference and Adam will reach top ten in radio play and Adam can attract even more fans then.

Anonymous said...

I'm streaming Adam's album on Spotify. I might buy two more albums from Best Buy tomorrow.

broddybounce, to answer your question of the blue clickable links, yes, they are sometimes hard to tell what they are. Sometimes they look like titles. If you have already been to the site they no longer show blue, they are black. The spacing can be an issue as well. I have noticed that on glitzylady's posts. My opinion would be that it would be the clearest as the following:

Article link: Billboard 200

Story 1: blah blah blah

Hope that helps.

So explain how all these millions of streams mean so much when they only gave Adam 5K in converted sales

Commercial performance
In the US market, music industry forecasters predicted that the album could enter the top 10 of the US Billboard 200 chart dated 4 July, with about 35,000 units in its first week. It debuted on the Billboard 200 at number three, selling 42,000 copies in its first week, but totalling 47,000 units including streams and tracks.

4:39, "The updated Billboard 200 will utilize accepted industry benchmarks for digital and streaming data, equating 10 digital track sales from an album to one equivalent album sale, and 1,500 song streams from an album to one equivalent album sale. All of the major on-demand audio subscription services are considered, including Spotify, Beats Music, Google Play and Xbox Music. " ~ Billboard multi-Metric Consumption

Yeah Adam is on top of the music industry. Keep telling yourself that. I want Adam to do well but I'm not going to lie to myself and say that TOH has been a massive success when it has failed worse then Trespassing and For Your Entertainment.

Anonymous said...

4:39. One must have a job with Nielsen Soundscan to find out how they exactly measure these things for Billboard charts. 5k is a great number. If I'm not mistaken after Swift Adam got the highest multimetric measure. I gotta read that report again.

Admins, please delete 5:29 PM. There is no excuse to write something like that. It fits the grounds of being deleted for being mean. I am sick and tired of reading rude things and all the fighting here.

Good question. Why is Canadian allow to call people names and say things like that?

Dee R Gee said...

Comparing the FYE era and even the TP era to the TOH makes no sense. The music buying and selling methods have changed drastically. Hard copy sales have plummeted in favor of streaming, downloads, etc. I know this has been said before many times, but I still see people on this site making the comparison as if it proves that Adam hasn't done well with TOH. This is a time for celebration, not for negativity.

@Canadian: you've been on here quite a bit now and have contributed a lot, which we appreciate. But please be respectful. There is no room for that kind of language on this blog. Your comment has been deleted.

Congratulations, Adam!!! I'm very happy about the sales numbers that even exceeded earlier estimates. People need to realize that the musical landscape has changed within the past 3 years (and that it is completely unfair to make comparisons with already established superstars). #2 in total album sales, and #3 in album sales plus streaming sounds more than respectable. 1,500 streams equal one album sale, right? So... not too bad. Let's celebrate and hope for sustained success of TOH past this week. WBR is doing an excellent job. They must truly believe in Adam.

Anonymous said...

Why was @5:34 comment NOT deleted?

Mocking Adam (first sentence) and mocking his fans who want to celebrate Adam & TOH plus misinformative & outdated in her/his comparison of today's sales data vs that of former years due to a lot of changes beyond Adam's, his management's and his fans' control.

@Canadian, don't let the negative nellies and whiny willies get to you!
Let's keep on loving and supporting Adam, and crawl thru fire if necessary, right? :)))

Fans have turned themselves and their purses, inside and out to make this happen. TS is a superstar and JT a legend in America. Thinking just his name alone, made about every other household in America run out and physically buy his music. Adam has done a great job, keeping his fanbase intact and engaged over the past years since TP. We need the gp onboard and that fact is undeniable. This is like a brand new start for Adam in more ways than one. I do wish interviewers would focus on the music and not so much on Adam's looks, although I sure am happy with the cover pic on my cd. I'm certain Adam's team has their strategy in place and Adam is very popular in Europe, so sales will still get a boost, once that promo gets rolling. I'm thinking RIR with QAL will definitely garner some fans over there. Sure Adam will be selling his merchandise like hotcakes.
