The Republican Party National Convention used Queen's "We Are The Champions" as the intro music for presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump, on July 18, 2016.

There has been much discussion of the use of the music, and of Dr. Brian May's earlier frustration with the candidate's previous use of the song #WATC in June 2016. Dr. May's statement at that time included the words:

"Regardless of our views on Mr Trump’s platform, it has always been against our policy to allow Queen music to be used as a political campaigning tool".

We posted more about Dr. May's earlier statements and today's event here, which in part included a tweet which was retweeted from "The Hollywood Reporter" by Adam Lambert:

Adam Lambert, current Queen band frontman, later posted this photo on both his Twitter and Instagram pages, with the hashtags #truth #queen #freddiemercury:

Very well said, Adam.

Even if the Trump convention has the legal right to use the song (and there is some debate about that), the fact that Brian May expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that is was used a few months ago should mean something to the RNC. Why use music from a band whose lead member says he does not like the candidate? (and Brian has said this.) Bands and performers in the past have told certain candidates to STOP using their music. I wonder if Brian will say anything about this.

And yes, well said, Adam. You have a right to say what you feel.

I canNOT comprehend how anyone can support a man that is "In Your Face!" to everyone and everything. His supporters are just that, they have given him the power to be UGLY to the first degree and Trump is running with it without constraints and using this power to self glory at the expense of everyone else.

DRG, I feel bad for Brian. Donald Trump only understands filthy talk and death threats and we know Brian will never ever be like that.

You guys this is just music for everyone to enjoy regardless. Relax.

Glad Adam responded even if it wo t stop Trump from using WATC.

sugar buss, I guess I could relax if I thought Donald Trump could ever be the champion of anything. But that idea is completely removed from everything I see of Trump. It just galls me that he uses that song. Height of arrogance, IMO. Let's see if he uses it again.

I've lived thru the terms of 13 presidents. This is the first time I have felt contempt and abject fear at the thought of a candidate as poorly equipped as Trump might possibly be elected. I doubt he knows the definition of the word diplomacy.

I agree JAK.
I suspect Trumps definition of diplomacy would be something like "a weakness in others'.

There are many instances of musicians and bands requesting that their music NOT be used for political purposes, in political campaigns, etc... It is nothing new that Queen has requested their music NOT be used by Mr. Trump or the Republican Party in general, for "official" public, widely broadcast on national TV, purposes. It's understandable given the Republican party's platform this year. Queen's members certainly have the right to request their music not be used. It's been my observation and experience that the majority of politicians & parties are respectful of that request after being told once.. Using WATC once was forgivable but unfortunate, in my opinion. The second time, at the convention last night, was a blatant and disrespectful show of ignoring Queen, the band's, already expressed wishes. I would imagine there will be repercussions. Dr. May was firm in his request that they not use it further.. I suspect there may be legal action this time..

Music is universal and it should not matter. But the band calls the shots I guess that is how it works.
This has happened with other artists also. I would thing it would be good advertising for the song and group. I guess if you do not like something you protest in anyway shape or form. This is called freedom of speech. Politics is a touchy subject, and everyone has there own opinion. I don't take sides. Love and Peace.

sugar buss - thank you for your opinion, but IMHO WATC is not just music, it is an anthem with secondary and symbolic meaning, with a message not unilaterally appropriate for anyone at any time. Yes, music is universal but should we not be incensed if terrorists adopted the song? The sad issue is the lack of control an artist has over his work once it is disseminated and used by parties without discretion.

Not a smart thing for Adam to start getting involved in politics. There are gay issues in both political parties. With the unrest, and crazies in the world today, it is a dangerous thing to do.

Sounds like lack of communication. It is not Trumps fault. He has more then enough to worry about.

I think this has been stated before, Adam has a right to express his opinion as a concerned citizen. His "political" comments are few and far between, restrained and not abusive or disruptive, but intelligent and rational. It would be quite odd for him to ignore the WATC issue, and the Freddie pic and statement was brief and completely on point.

It has been stated that they were given permission to use it. My question is ... WHO are they & WHO gave them permission? Aren't Brian & Roger supposed to be included in this so called 'permission' ... and if they weren't consulted ... WTH weren't they?? Seems pretty 'underhanded' to me!! Good for you ADAM ... love your response!! I've had all I can take of this egotistical ... meglomaniacal ... Little HITLER ... who is bamboozling his way into the White House ... and I cannot understand WHY he has made it this far?? (shudders)

In the latest article I posted here on Adam Lambert 24/7 News, from the LA Times, it is clearly not completely cut and dried as to whether the blanket "permission" that was given to the venue was the correct permission.. (Clearly it was not). Go to the link below for more insight to this complicated legal and ethical situation.
