Adam Lambert is headed out on the road—again. The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter is set to tour North America this summer as the frontman of Queen alongside the band's surviving members Roger Taylor and Brian May.
It's far from the first time Lambert has taken the stage with the band, with whom he's been performing in varying capacities since he appeared on American Idol in 2009, but this North American arena tour may be their most ambitious yet. For Lambert, the collaboration isn't about an attempt to fill Freddie Mercury's shoes: "I'm not trying to replace him!" Lambert says. "It's very much a celebration of the legacy of the band. I'm a fan that's gotten this amazing opportunity to sing this music—to bring the songs back to life."
Lambert spoke with TIME about the dynamic with Queen, the sound of his new music and how things have changed for gay performers.

"...he's been performing in *varying capacities...referencing with Queen.
Not *varying capacities...just one capacity, as Frontman of Queen.

"gay culture" ... it does have its own distinct features; would be better if it could be intertwined with other cultures. Separate distinct cultures bring out their strength, that is good, but must always exist alongside others rather than be distinctly separate and different for its own sake. I have lived all my life treating and viewing everyone the same, it' my mindset. I view everyone as fellow humans regardless who you are. But I do steer clear of pseudos whom I'm not sure who they are and what they stand for; swinging like a pendulum back and forth; that confuses me.

Perhaps Adam may be including jazz, rock, blues in his next album; he said it would be "blusier and earthier".

Here's Queen/Adam's arrangement of 'I Want It All'...kind of reminds me of that earthly/organic sound and a superb entwining beyween Brian's guitar and Adam's earthly/organic vocals...the prelude:

Very interesting to read the part that was not in the actual Time article. Adam seemed to have many more doubts and difficult moments during and after Idol than we realized. He has always presented himself so well through it all that it is a little surprising that he went through more ups and downs emotionally than it seemed. I think he really paved the way for other gay performers to be upfront about their sexuality without fear. He has a place in our cultural history, I think.

I was wondering about something else: "I want to do it more for me. If people are into it, cool." I wonder if he didn't feel that way about his last album.

Dee R Gee, in a sense, this shows how well Adam covered up his doubts and difficulties, which he is comfortable talking about now...thankfully. So sorry he went through that, but it was probably a "maturing" experience.

That certainly explained his song "Ghost Town"...which portrayed Adam as discouraged and feeling disillusioned by life. I always felt it related a great deal to the failure of his album "Trespassing" to "catch on".... even after its auspicious start as No.1.

Adam's TOH tour was a beautifully meshed group of very diverse songs from all three of his albums. That will be further enriched by whatever "Blues" and "earthy" songs" he introduces in his next album.

If Adam has learned anything from his time with Queen it is that a broad spectrum of genres in a concert is more interesting for the artist AND the audience... as long as it's being presented by superb musicians----which they are...which HE IS.

Nobody can sing across the genres like Adam..... Nobody!
