Adam Lambert mention via Buddy TV: Who Should Judge ABC's 'American Idol' Reboot?

American Idol is coming back to TV, this time on ABC. Over the past several days and weeks, there's been a lot of speculation over which network would snag the iconic show. Now that that's settled, one of the remaining questions is: who will the judges be? The Hollywood Reporter says that there's a chance an announcement will be made at ABC's Upfront event on May 16.

Will producers bring back any previous judges? What about former contestants? Will the panel consist of only singers, or will there be a record executive (a la Simon Cowell) or a celebrity who's not a singer?

Back when there was talk of former contestants becoming judges, I very much wanted Adam Lambert to get one of those spots. His success includes his solo albums (he's the first openly gay artist to have an album debut at #1 on the charts), touring with the legendary band Queen and acting on Glee and in the Rocky Horror remake. Like Kelly and Jennifer, Adam has judging experience as well. He was a judge on Australia's X Factor. And also like Jennifer, his artist won.

This feels like deja vu all over again and again. I don't know if Adam will be or should be a judge but it always puts him in the press at the start of every Am Idol season. Also nice to see him on tv spots like ET. Hooray for more publicity.

I predict there will only be one AI alum on the judges panel and it will be Kelly C. John Legend has been mentioned, too. I don't think there will be two AI alums on the panel. Besides Kelly, they likely will pick a producer or composer or another singer, but not from AI. Of course, Adam is a natural choice to me. But the producers of the show have to look at the demo of the viewing audience as well. Just my thoughts!

Just read that THE VOICE judge line-up in Kelly Clarkson, JHud, Blake and Levine. So there goes the rumor about Kelly being on Idol. She never mentioned the Voice when she was asked about Idol the other day. She was obviously already set with the Voice.

This leaves a chance that Adam could be chosen for and Idol spot. It would be great for him. A real healthy boost in may ways, including $$$$. The two shows will air back to back, I think. Competition might be fierce!

I want to TV exposure for Adam SO MUCH! The Idol job would lead to other media coverage for him. And exposure leads to new opportunities!

I am wishing for Adam a role in the JC Superstar production. JMO -think it is very easy to get caught up in the AI nostalgia and thinking it will automatically return to its peak popularity and success, and make stars of its judges. The show will have a lot of built in obstacles to overcome, the main one being that it is returning only after an absence of 1 year. Not sure that AI can resurrect the ratings, a young demographic, winners with traction, enough interest for a tour. It will be an upward climb, critics will be ready to pounce. How committed will ABC be?

No doubt about it, Adam will be the most suitable person to lift the sunken ship stuck in the seabed. As you know, that ain't easy; if you don't know the intricacies, the step-by-step procedure, avoiding the pitfalls, the ship may sink again.

One important pitfall that must be avoided at all cost is the sudden results that take viewers and voters by shock. That in fact was the straw that broke AI's back. I recall the decline started almost immediately in the following S9 season and down down down. I advocated getting Adam back to plug the leak in the sinking ship. Well, I hope they get Adam back to lift it up from the seabed; 2.0.

I think Adam, being very sensitive, will not hurt the young fledgling contestants; he will be able to talk nicely to them, encourage them not to give up on their dream or maybe steer their dream into other channels; rather than having contestants going home broken and in despair. Adam, you got to look into this aspect seriously, no point hurting people, this is supposed to be fun in the first place. And you had so much fun on AI S8 and the subsequent success, the cherry on the icing...even when you lost! Joke of the century.

Anon8, you are right about the new Idol, of course. Lots of "ifs" and "maybes." Of course, we all want what is best for Adam's career.

And like you, I'm hoping that MAYBE he would get a chance to audition for JCSS. He says he'd love to play Judas. It's a rich, juicy part. Adam has the voice and the presence for he role. The timing of rehearsing for it would likely be pretty tight if it's supposed to be aired in spring of 2018. But if they wanted Adam enough, there would be a way to work that out. I would love to see him break into acting in a big show like that. I just saw JCSS on the professional stage a while ago. Fantastic show. I've seen it several times, but I loved the new production I saw.

Hope Adam gets his shot.

Maybe May 16 will bring us more news on the judges. This is a quote from an earlier article.

"TMZ reported that ABC is likely to land Idol's return — for a March 2018 launch — with a formal announcement expected at its May 16 upfront presentation to ad buyers. "

This is the link to that article.

It's interesting that The Voice isn't looking at ANY of its own alums for fill the panel seats. They are looking at AI alums and other non-singing show people. That says something about the success of The Voice. It hasn't produced one real star who is considered worthy of taking a seat.

Good point DRG! I wished I'd noticed that.
Think maybe the Voice might have hired them in an attempt to keep Idol from being a success, tho?

Someone suggested that Carrie Underwood and Adam should be judges. I don't know who would be the third one, but those 2 would look good and be excellent for the job.

Lollymop, I think Carrie and Adam would be good. And John Legend has been asked and he seems agreeable about doing it. I'm just not sure they'll want two AI alums on the panel. We'll find out soon enough.

Adam has always wanted to be an AI judge, not sure why exactly; perhaps he likes working as a family unit, a sense of belonging and helping budding artists find their niche. Adam would be the best choice because not only has he gone through the whole process from contestant to judging, he can judge almost every genre in depth as he has performed practically every genre on stage. He may be able to hone more skills too, to eventually put on his own Adam Lambert show...with a mix of singing and comedy which he pulled off spectacularly on the recent show with Queen. Oh, Queen may benefit a bit as well, in their promotion of their Freddie Mercury film if they come on as guests to accompany Adam; Finale 2.0. Good direction, can reach across the globe which encompass his wide-reach fan-base..
Just a bit of downside...these singing competitions, a fad, seem declining in audience enthusiasm. Also, now Media such as ABC seems embroiled in present political conflict, which may affect voters/viewership but not too drastically.

In Holland it's the Voice rather than Idols where the talented people go to and come from. Maybe something to do with the judges? I don't know who the judges are in the American Voice.

@Dee R Gee, maybe The Voice will choose Alisan as a judge for one of their future contests. Then again, perhaps The Voice prefer to choose a judge who has nothing to do with The Voice but who is involved in some other way in the music industry.
