Star Tribune: Queen finds new king in singer Adam Lambert, as proven in St. Paul show

At the risk of sounding sacrilegious, God did not save Queen. But Adam did.
That’s Adam Lambert, the “American Idol” runner-up from 2009. In 2012, he joined up with two surviving members of the British rock band Queen, which had pretty much disappeared after the 1991 death of singer Freddie Mercury, for some concerts. Now they have rebuilt the band to surprising heights, drawing more than 15,000 people to jam-packed Xcel Energy Center on Friday and filling arenas around the world.
In 2005, Queen tried a comeback with singer Paul Rodgers of Bad Company. His performances were workmanlike, the shows unexciting. The arrangement was short-lived.
Then along came Lambert, the best thing to happen to Queen since the 1992 film “Wayne’s World” featured the band’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” introducing its ambitious prog-rock to new generations.
On Friday, Queen + Adam Lambert, as the group is officially billed, was the right combination of bombast, camp and arena rock, with the kind of delicious excess to thrill Queen fans young and old.
To be honest, Lambert is not a great rock singer. He’s not a natural. But he is adept at acting like a rock star, singing with power but not consistent passion. He seldom got lost in his songs the way the great rock singers do. And the one new number, “Two Fux” from his upcoming solo album, was a misguided dud.

Adam doesn't sing with passion??? WTF

Well, his reviewer seems to have bought into the QAL thing about half-way. He doesn't really "get" Adam or the evolution of his role with Queen. Their history together is now quite deep. And passion? Adam puts passion into everything he does. Couldn't quite figure out that comments.

As for being a true "rock" singer, Adam has never claimed to be one. He's far more operatic and clear-toned than Freddy was, and admittedly, does not have the raw grit. But he doesn't try to fake it, either. He plays it as himself, which is what Brian and Roger love about him. He doesn't try to copy Freddy and that's the magic of it.

So far St. Paul reviewers are clueless about who/what QAL is about. No sense in trying to educate them to updated Queen + Adam Lambert! On their most cognitive day they'd still remain clueless!! Maybe if they stopped looking for a dead singer in ADAM & realized how brilliant he is in his own delivery of the Queen catalog of songs .. they could see beyond the blind specks in their eyes ... and that goes for the commenters on this same article!! Really sad .. they just don't "GET IT" & I don't give Two *** ... because I DO!! GET IT!!

Lol starts out saying Adam is Gueens salvation then end with he can't sing. Who writes this crap????

The comments on that article too!! Terrible, they actually said Adam can't sing. Wtf?!
The guy has a voice 1 in a million or more! Can't sing my ass.

Meh. I hope they never go back there.

Frog in the well syndrome reflected in the writer/article. It says Adam doesn't have a rock voice, with some disdain...thank God he doesn't. I'd rather take his operatic glam rock which is also rock; well, he does the rock scream, doesn't he. Can't analyse voice this way, should be whether a particular voice fits the genre and Queen is mostly glam rock not the harsh growl rock which won't work.

Just read an interesting squib on the reviewer, Jon Bream - he has been involved with music since 1974, attended numerous concerts and interviewed big names. The last line was most telling "Jon has yet to satisfy a request of many Star Tribune readers: that he take a music appreciation class"!!!

I find that he is guilty of his own Adam observation - he is adept at acting like a reviewer but lacks the knowledge, perspective, and objectivity for a substantive review of QAL. There were no supportive statements for his numerous subjective opinions as in "he seldom got lost in his songs the way great rock singers do......" He needs to elaborate and explain himself.

I was at the concert last night in St. Paul....(as well as the first concert of the last tour in Chicago.) The show was phenomenal! It was a sold out show with people with signs begging for tickets on the street. I wish they hadn't dropped 2 songs (it's Late and Spread Your Wings) from their original play list, but that was only me wanting more! That review headline was good, as were parts of the review....but the guy just doesn't get it. BUT......I so hope they come back here to St. Paul. The crowd LOVED them....and Adam and Queen were thrilled by the reception we gave them. Ignore the ignorant.....xoxo;)

Actually, the best judges of voice / style for Queen songs would be Brian and Roger who state unequivocally Adam has one-in-a billion voice. They definitely know what they are saying, they have experimented with other very good singers who didn't work out so well; and they themselves are really excellent singers, their harmony in unison with Freddie and now Adam, at the beginning of BR; like a whole choir singing. Rock voice is one particular voice genre and should not be used as a yardstick to judge Adam's voice which is multi-lateral in nature.

Only the last paragraph is negative, the rest is very positive. The 'not consistent passion' I don't get.

He didn't get lost? Well, sorry about that.
