Yahoo: 1. Adam Lambert — “Ring of Fire” (Season 8) @ The 40 greatest 'American Idol' performances of all time

By now, you’ve surely heard the surprising news that, two years after it was canceled by Fox, American Idol is returning to the airwaves on Sunday, March 11, courtesy of ABC. It remains to be seen if a new network can revive the show (though I have hope!), but it’s undeniable that over Idol’s 15 previous seasons, many contestants delivered some truly fantastic performances. And I got to witness — and write about — all of them.
So now seems like the right time to look back at the best Idol performances of all time, as chosen by … me! Please note that, in order to keep this list contestant-focused, I didn’t include any all-star duets (sorry, Queen, KISS, er, Meat Loaf). Also, for the sake of variety and semi-brevity, I did not load up this list with multiple performances by the same singers. But I enthusiastically encourage you to hit up YouTube or Hulu and binge-watch anything and everything by Adam Lambert, Kelly Clarkson, David Cook, Allison Iraheta, Fantasia, et al. All of those contestants could have filled best-of lists all by themselves.

1. Adam Lambert — “Ring of Fire” (Season 8)
This was probably the most polarizing performance on Idol, and definitely the most exciting. Love him or hate him, Adam knew how to get people’s attention, sometimes get people downright angry, and make those who were faint of heart and/or feeble of mind squirm in their support hose — all very good things in the world of rock and pop. On this fateful night, Adam took a strong stance, making it clear that he planned to stay true to himself, even if that meant freaking out Randy Travis with his Goth manicure or refusing to “go country” on Opry Night (though I think black-clad country maverick Johnny Cash would have appreciated this remake). Many Glambert performances — “Mad World,” “Tracks of My Tears,” “Whole Lotta Love” — could’ve made this list, but “Ring of Fire” is the one that really put Adam on the glittery map.

Wonderful article! And I agree wholeheartedly about Adam's "Ring of Fire". It has always been my favorite....so gutsy of Adam, so stirring, such a showcase for his amazing voice! I revisit it often on Youtube and am each time surprised again that those sounds could come from a mere mortal! Goosebumps!

Well, I'm so glad Adam got such great recognition and compliments in this Yahoo article.

But on a less happy note, I just read the Cover article in TV guide entitled "Idol is Back". Speaking of past contestants, the article states,"Idol boasts the biggest success stories....among them, superstars Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Kathrine McPhee and Jennifer Hudson."

NOT ONE MENTION OF ADAM LAMBERT!!!!! In TV Guide! About American Idol! I am SO angry! When will this nonsense stop! Grrrrrr!

Not a fan of "Ring of Fire" but obviously, Adam should be in 1st place.

BTW...I wrote a letter of complaint to TV Guide about the omission of Adam Lambert in their article about American Idol.

If anyone else wants to complain to them.....email:....letters@tvgm.com

I stopped getting that magazine awhile ago. I recently got an offer from them for a $5 per year subscription, but declined. It just doesn’t keep up with what’s going on, not just with Adam, but in general.....don’t think it’s doing well.

Loved Ring of Fire during GNT, and Johnny Cash would have loved it. You know he always wore black as a protest to all those in prison. A real pioneer.

Until ADAM sang Ring of Fire on Idol .. I did not like the song at all by Johnny Cash!! I thought that as a song it was boring & repetitive ... over & over .. but when ADAM sang it .. WOW!! It was like hearing the song for the first time & I fell in love with ADAM's version!! Now it's one of my all-time ADAM songs & apparently I'm not the only one who feels that way!!

What a difference the right singer can do for a song!!

Wait!! Hubby is watching a PBS special of QUEEN's Journey from start to present day but it's going off ... dammit!! It's a subscription show .. and they're offering different packages for $7, $12 & $25 .. News of the World album .. Greatest Hits Album & News of the World .. and the Ultimate Package .. all three for $25 per month with 6 DVD's being offered!! The end of the film features ADAM with QUEEN now!! That's the only part I saw .. too late for the whole thing but if you go to PBS .. there may be more info!! Just thought I'd share!!

One more thing .. went to Ytube & read that Marc Martel & Freddie are sharing vocals in the biopic .. then Remi is lip syncing over them!!

Thanks for the info, Tess. :-) I'd love to see the special of Queen's Journey from start to present, and look forward to seeing the biopic.

I too love Adams version of Ring of Fire, sounds fresh and more interesting! Nanbert, thanks for the info on TV Guides ommision of Adam, I wrote down the email address and I will also put in my two cents! During Adams GNT days a local music writer said something offense and I gave this writer a "piece of my mind"!, he never responded back! Who do these journalists/writers think Adam is? This makes my blood boil too Nanbert! Adam accomplished so so much and it should be celebrated in his own country! What a shame it's not happening here. I also get The Parade magazine in my Sunday's paper and I too noticed, there's nothing on Adam! Grrrrrrr! Lambert Outlaw, I was watching PBS last night!!! On occasion, when tv is boring on go to PBS, however I was watching because they had the Bee Gees, even tho it was from 1989, lol. I still watched because Bee Gees is part of my growing up and I love their music too. But I heard nothing at all about Queen!

At least "Time" came out with kudos for Adam in its write up about American Idol. They were doing their homework!

Not nearly enough yet....but there is always slow progress. I'd venture to say that Adam's name is better known around the world than in the U.S.!

But Adam will finally receive his "just deserts", as they say. Talent like his will prevail!
He is iconic!...and the world is discovering that more and more each day.

BTW...I wonder if Adam is in the Queen biopic. I remember once he said he'd like to play Freddie's lover (or one of them) in the film. Has anyone heard anything about that?

NEXT they should do a follow-up movie about Adam bringing Queen back to life!...with Adam playing the lead...of course!

Hi Nanbert. Over the past few days I began to reflect back on the American Idol days when Adam was a contestant. I 'You Tubed' his performance of 'Ring of Fire' (as I do from time to time) and I was just as amazed by his performance today as I was 10 years ago. It was the very best performance of any American Idol contestant I had ever heard...it was brilliant, captivating, creative and in a league of its own. Hearing Simon's comments about his 'Ring of Fire' performance made me lose all respect for him as a judge and a music industry icon. How could anyone not see and appreciate the 'genius' that went into his performance. That performance, alone, made him the American Idol, in my opinion. And Adam continued to rise in his stardom, in subsequent weeks giving new challenges to each new song selection. He set the bar with all previous and future singing competitions when he took on country week, stayed true to himself and gave the most remarkable live performance I had ever seen and will ever see. His vocals were amazing and his delivery of the song was absolutely breathtaking. After he lost to Kris 'what's his name' I stopped watching the show because that was just how dissappointed, angry and hurt I was after the finale. Simon tried to destroy another contestants' dream on AGT season 6, with his narrow mind and inability to recognize a great talent, when the opera singer Lys Agnes, while staying true to herself, performed Aerosmith's 'Dream On'. Simon was not able to appreciate her creativity and style poured into her performance. She was voted off after that performance. Simon did come to his senses during the 2018 season of The X Factor UK with the very awesome, one of a kind singer/performer Dalton Harris. Dalton's performance of 'California Dreaming' and 'I Have Nothing' was beyond exceptional and he went on to win the competition. Just like you I totally 'got it' with Adam's 'Ring of Fire' performance and I consider it the greatest live performance of all time. Simon owes him a huge apology and he should humble himself for not recognizing such greatness in a singer who was still, at that time' an amateur. Peace and blessings to you should you ever read my message.
