I love adam so much - he is the most talented guy anywhere with a voice like no other,, however, I think he took it too far with the performance for the ama's,,, it took away from hearing his incredible voice,,, too much stairs,,,I am upset, because all of the songs on his album are so incredible with his voice,,, that is why people love him so much,,, I wanted to hear his voice more,,, I love that he is edgy, but this was way too over the top,,, I am afraid,,, even the audience was stunned and quiet,,, i hope that he comes out soon with another one of his tracks, that show off is incredible voice,

I'm a little confused as to what was going on in it. And I think it couldve been better put together. He sounded good from what I could hear, but at times his voice got drowned out and at others it seemed a little strained, like it was tired. The back up vocals weren't good either.
It was also very over the top. I Iike that it wasn't normal, but I think maybe the makeout thing took it a bit too far.
I'm not insulting him, just giving an honest critique. the song is good. I'm just hoping the next time that he performs it it'll be more put together, his voice less strained and easier to hear. I am also a little nervous as to what reactions re. I couldn't really tell the audiences reactions
And rest your voice Adam :). Couldn't stand you losing it

I just watched it back again,,, I am the biggest adam fan there is,,, but this song and dance number just did not do him justice,,too much moving around, which took away from his great voice,, I am upset for him,, I think that he should do his own dancing and movenents like he did on idol and the tour - like kelly clarkson did tonight,,, just heard her voice, and I wanted to just hear adams incredible voice... I wish he had picked one of the other songs to debut,,, there was too much going on with the stairs, up and down, and not enough of adam and his voice,,, I still love you adam,,, you are the greatest,,,

If he were competing for doing the most shocking perfomance he would win by far!!
A talent like Adam shouldn't be wasted in poor attempts to gain attention like this one..
His face is already on every website and magazine over the world.. He didn't need this

I hope he comes out with a good explanation..

you are right, what one of the others said,,, when I played it back again and again, his voice was not spot on all the time, and it did get drowned out many times,,, there was too much concentrating on the moves, and not enough on his voice, which is what everyone wants to hear and loves,,, he is such a great performer, and sometimes less is more,,,I think he had some bad advice,,, I know he wants to be out of the box, which is good, but it was just too much tonight, and I saw that the audience did not give the screaming, clapping, incredible reaction that I thought and hoped they would after his performance, like they did on Idol,,, and even on the tour,,, there are many other songs on his album which so much better show off his vocal ability... don't get me wrong, I have played this song in my car constantly since it came out, but tonight it did not sound as good,,, I am upset for him,,, I want him to soar,,,I know he will,,,

I agree,,, he didn't need this type of attention, and it went way too far, even for him,,, he is everywhere and so popular,,, I am so concerned about what impact this will have,,, I hope he can release one of the other tracks really soon, to take away from this one,, after hearing all of the other tracks, I would not have picked this one as my debut,,, the others so much more enhance his voice,,, hopefully we will see and hear something different when he is on good morning america and letterman and ellen,,,

GUYS THERE WERE SOUND MIXING PROBLEMS

I love Adam...have followed his career closely since the beginning, but what is going on lately...first the ridiculous album cover, and now this appauling display of soft porn...why does he have to do these things to get such negative attention...he is already one of the best vocalists in the world and this show number was degrading to him. He forgets that he is on live TV and not on his concert tour, where he can turn up the heat. Adam you blew it!

My 6 yr old daughter adores him. She couldn't wait to see Adam on TV tonight. She fell asleep too soon but I woke her up for this. Now I wish I hadn't. No wonder they put him at the end. They were hoping no kids would see him. All she could say is "that's disgusting". I did not put words in her mouth. She knows it's not right. She knows he's gay and "sorta" what that means but I don't appreciate having to explain to my young daughter that he was just being theatrical. We still love Adam, but.... Furthermore, yes he fell but what a helluva save. I think that he didn't get the reaction from the audience that he wanted either. Look at his face right at the end when he had a chance to look out there. I think he knows he screwed up. This is something he should have tried later once everyone was used to his post-idol style. For a 1st intro to the people that don't follow the blogs and articles, I'm sure they are shocked/put off. I'm fine with it for adults, but kids shouldn't see it. I didn't expect it to be G-rated, but I didn't expect it to be X-rated either. As far as I know, this is still prime time. Aren't they supposed to put up some parental guidance disclaimer up before they show stuff like this on prime time? Like someone said earlier, there's a time and place for this. I'm not an idiot just because I'm upset my kid saw this. It's not appropriate with no warning, that's all. I however liked it for myself. He's hot and always will be. But I think the kiss and the crotch stuff was gratuitous and for shock value and completely unnecessary.

yea- there were definitely sound problems,,, because the bad sounded not so good, it was hard to hear adam, and his voice was not it top shape,,, he is one of the best singers in the world, but tonight did not at all show that to the world,,, his voice was off, I think probably from too much staging, too many dancers , too much up and down the stairs... too much going on,,, I mean, I don't care if he is gay, bi whatever,, I love him,, I follow him on the web several times a day, have his pic on my screen etc,,, listen to his new album which his voice sounds incredible,,, but he just needed to do an incredible vocal,,, now that would have had the crowd on its feet screaming and clapping,,, I think whoever choreographed that should be fired and yelled at,,, not good,, too much going on,,, thing is, we all know he is gay, he has done mag covers, interviews, articles etc,,, and we don't care,,, we love him,,, but he didn't need to have the graphic displays,,, it just took away from his singing and his incredible voice,,, adam, come back to us,, with your beautiful voice,,, that is all you need to become famous and the greatest singer ever,,, don't need the shock stuff,,,

I loved it!

So disappointed.....too weird, too strange, he didn't even seem comfortable....It looked like he fell on the platform, the stairs were silly.
Adam, don't let them use you like this. You have incredible talent, you don't need to be anything but a singer! I don't even think the audience was into it!

Anonymous said...

I'm sure he did fall - poor guy. And on his 1st live TV performance. I too am a HUGE Adam fan but was very disappointed in the performance tonight. I am an adult - no small children to worry about - but I think he so totally overdid the sexual stuff and it just wasn't necessary -- especially on live TV! Oh well, still love him.

Love you Adam......feel like you were just under too much pressure and hype tonight. Too much moving around for your voice to be heard.....and we couldn't see your handsome face for all the movement either. Nothing wrong with the kiss....but the face in the crotch really wasn't necessary. I know you want to make a statement, and you are flipping off Out Magazine and all they have been complaining about, but cool down bb....you are a man that has the ability to become an entertainment icon. Remember....you said you don't want to be a poster boy for anything....that should include for shock too.

As soon as I saw him in the Mormon missionary suit on the red carpet I knew his performance was going to be over the top. My heart sank watching it, it was a coarse and degrading subjugation of people. Did Adam look happy and trimphant at the end? I don't think so. Leno would say "what the hell were you thinking of?" I think the stumble was quite literally what happend tonight and does not predict Adam's future. Doriangrey

I can't believe all the negative reactions to Adam's AMA performance. Were they not watching the whole show? Adam's set & performance pretty much fit in with all the others. Performers were grabbing themselves and others all night! Yes, there were sound issues, but not Adam's fault. People please keep in mind that Adam is DIFFERENT EVERY TIME HE PERFORMS. His sets reflect his songs. This was a '30s Berlin cabaret set. And what did they do in those cabarets? Adam has said over and over that he likes all kinds of music. This is ONE song! If you don't like it, listen to the rest of the album, and you'll see many more ways Adam expresses himself.

Wow i wish i could disagree with all the comments being made as i am a HUGE Adam Lambert fan but the truth is the truth. I am a gay man and i liked the fact that he included male dancers into his routine but that performance was a bit of a shock, and not a good one. I wish the vocals hadn't messed up as well and i feel really bad for Adam. Go Adam, I am sure your next performance will wow us all.

bigasm84 said...

Oh and i have one more thing to add : Kill the Choreographer!!!

Anonymous said...

YES, THE Choreographer!!! MUST GO!!!!

Anonymous said...

The Adam ,that I love was not there......seemed mad!!!!

Anonymous said...

Oh Adam, What happened...I really don't know what to say, guess I'm in as much shock as all of the other people before me...
Whatever it was, please fix it, you are such a rare talent and such a down to earth good person, don't lose that, it is what we love so much about you...We all know who you are, there is no need to overpower us with the fact you are gay, thats secondary, you have the whole package, keep it together...I feel terrible for you today but it is something you and only you can fix...All of your fans love you, come back to who you are, we miss you...
Love you Adam.....

I watched it streamed first, and then I watched it televised hoping I was mistaken in what I saw and heard. This song could have been performed in a very sexy way, but this way wasn't. From the odd beginning to the ending wail, this performance was way off. His voice lost its stability and at times was not even on key; the backup singers were dreadful; the constant movement all over that scaffolding took away from the vocal performance, and the S & M theme was not even sexy, but just boring. I feel so bad for Adam because this debut was so hyped and the expectations were so high. However, he was in on every aspect of the planning, so he has to accept responsibility. He's so much better than this. I wanted him to shine....and he didn't.

In the context of the whole AMA show I think Adam's number wasn't out of place, but in the context of what we know he's capable of, it was a let down.

I've been a fan since his first appearance on Idol, went to the summer concert, bought his cds. I'm a wee bit worried now that the future I (and all his fans) envisaged for him might elude him because of this one over-the-top performance by a "new kid on the block".

The establishment don't like this kind of thing.
Did you notice how Lady Ga-ga was passed over for the awards where she was nominated in favor of sqeaky clean Taylor Swift? See?

I'm not a young fan, I'm old enough to be Adam's grandmother, by the way. But I "get" him, whereas so many who are much younger and din't see him on American Idol don't - I hope they are not in the majority, because if they are Adam will be relegated to remain among the fringe performers, which isn't where he ought to be.

Adam, I think my expectations were so high that I expected some phenomenal show with your extraordinary vocals. Unfortunately, I think you were so busy trying to navigate the jungle gym that your singing suffered from it. The dancing was confusing and all over the place. Too much going on at once. It was not easy to watch.

I've read comments on lots of sites..both positive and negative, but I have one question:
SINCE WHEN IS HAVING CLASS, GOOD TASTE AND BEING DISCRIMINATING LABELED AS "BEING PRUDISH" and "NOT GETTING IT"?

Anonymous said...

I have read tones of opinions, watched the video at least a dozen times and still don't get it. What's the big deal. He did what he had to do and expressed himself, giving his best. Today everybody is talking about Adam's performance. I wonder how many of those who are now in shock ever saw him on youtube. Was it that different? C'mon!! I am not surprised, I am more than pleased because he completely delivered. Ok, his vocals were not the best, but were they that bad giving the circumstances?? It was not supposed to sound like the original track, he improvised. I admire the guy, he is a risk taker and not always perfect (thanks god!). As when he sang Ring of Fire (which I loved from the beginning) his next performance will gain even more fans, I am sure. It is not a question of understanding or even being tasteful, is a question of FEELING and Adam moved us all, for good or bad. This is nothing than good for an artist. Be proud Adam. Go ahead and do your thing. You have supporters all over the world.

I agree - I am one of the biggest older adam fans around,,, look for info on him every day on web, and have followed him,,, I am a music person myself, and his voice is something incredible like I have never heard,,, he has recently talked about not wanting to be so obvious about his sexuality, about it being all about the music,,, but last night none of it was about the music,, fire the correographer please,, she was an idiot, and I think maybe adam knew it, but it was too late,,, he could have danced around the stage, but the stairs were a big mistake, hard to follow, he fell, more looking for the stairs and not enough on the voice,, sound was bad, and his voice was not at its best,, we all love him because of his incredible voice, his niceness, gentleman, vision in music etc,, but he looked and acted angry last night, and it was not his best face or attitude,, was not as appealing as the adam we have grown to love,,, he can be edgy, could even be sexual, like in his Idol tour, but he didn't need to be so overly graphic, as it took away from his performance, and his singing,,, I so looked forward to him singing his face off, like no other there last night,, and he could have,, if there had been less emphasis on the stupid dancers , stairs, and porno moves,,, I am no prude, but that was not the adam last night that I or most of us were looking forward to seeing and hearing,,, I hope that he can fix this, and that people will forgive and forget, because there are some incredible songs on his album, I want him to show us and the world what he can do that we always have know he can,, come one adam,,, please do some good songs, with no s and m, on the good morning america show and letterman,,, show us what you can really do with your incredible voice,,, we want to hear that, not see the other stuff so much,,,

I can't believe that some are dismissing the bad vocals last night as no big deal. It's a music awards show, for heaven's sake. He should have put in a flawless vocal performance, which he is highy capable of doing. Instead he sacrificed the one thing that sets him apart from other vocalists. For what? A series of awkward moves on a scaffold and a bunch or worn out, tired, S & M cliches. Nothing creative, fresh, or innovative about that. We've seen it all before. Where was the sexy, smoldering adam with the voice and the moves?

Anonymous said...

I love adam so damn much. but this performance wasn't great. i agree, too much moving around, was all over the place with him and his dancers, and was a bit vulgar. His vocals suffered, and the highlight was the beginning when his vocals soared without straining to be heard around the music and from moving around so much.
on the other hand, i really understand adams side. girls do get away with it all the time (hello britney!!), but when a guy - a GAY guy - does it it is suddenly controversial.
And he wanted to get noticed. Mission accomplished. I don't think anyones talked about an award show performance more than his in a long time. He doesn't like to do things 'tame'. I think what he did was do the completely crazy insane WTF OTT stuff right in the beginning. that will immediately get himself noticed, and sort out who are true fans and who never seemed to be. It worked. his twitter followers have never increased so quickly.
But what annoys me is that people are saying stuff like "i used to be his biggest fan" and "I used to love you, adam, but i am now an ex-fan". If you were a hands down TRUE fan, you wouldn't throw him away because of a performance that wasn't good.
one thing i am upset about though, is that my mom found out about his performance. not all the details, but found out about it. i tried to keep it vague, saying it was 'over the top' and 'hard to really understand what was going on' and 'his vocals weren't the best.' i really hope she won't go and watch the performance, because that's NOT a conversation i want to have with her. especially since she is lesbian. she might be offended and not want me to listen to him.

Anonymous said...

True what the above commented said about his twitter followings!!! While I was doing my homework, I wrote down the amount of followers he had at that time - 238,530. Thirty minutes later, I refreshed and checked again. 238,631!!!!!! It increased by 101 followers in thirty minutes!!!!!! That performance definitely caught peoples eye, and it seems to have gotten a lot of people interested if his amount of followers increased so insanely rapidly!!!!

Adam had me during his interviews at the auditions for AI. When he showed us his incredible voice and stage presence, I was an instant fan for life. I guess that's why I have such a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. Adam could have rocked the world last night instead he shocked it. I pray he changes his career path and returns to the most incredible vocalist to come along in decades. Rock on Adam

Adam, Please, Please, rethink the direction you are going. I love your music. I want you to have a HUGE, HUGE career. You are an important part of my life. PLEASE, Don't push it to the limit - we care about you.

Anonymous said...

I think the person who pointed out that the set was supposed to be the a 1930's Cabaret in Berlin hit the nail on the head. Adam and the dancers were interpreting the song in this setting and it was a portrayal and not to be confused with who Adam really is. Please check out this link to the 1998 Tony Awards Show on TV about the musical "Cabaret" and see if you see any similarities in the set, costumes, actions, etc.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RF-AFJ5VFs&feature=related
Because the sound system was so messed up it threw Adam off quite a bit and I'm sure contributed to the disgusted look on his face at the end of the performance.

Anonymous said...

I can't figure out how you fault Adam for going too far and not the others?? The whole thing was a big sexual display!! I think you guys need to chill!! Trust Adam just a little bit. Yes their were sound issues, no it wasn't the best ever choregraphy, but the album is selling like crazy and he probably won a different type of fan due to his gutsy balls of steel!! Their were 14.5 million viewers! Haven't been that many since 2002 and only 1500 complaints to ABC.

Anonymous said...

1)The sound issues did not just affect Adam. Did you hear Fergie? Alot of them sounded awful. 2) Adam did trip and J Lo fell. Adam did the best recovery EVER!! 3)Adam was in line with the sexual content of the AMAs over the years and with Music Videos 4) Adam is selling albums big time!! 5) Adam's album is FANTASTIC!! so you need not worry he is going in the wrong direction. Chill, trust Adam's instincts, Enjoy!!!

We all know Adam is over the top. But the AMA's is not some fringe thingy out in the desert where only fringe people see it. That's why it's out there. Putting Burning Man in people's living rooms has alienated a lot of people who would have otherwise been fans, but now are repulsed. I have heard it all day. The businessman in him was not in charge last night or he would have been mindful of this....Teresa

I may be in the minority but I loved this performance! I can see why it didn't go too well with the general audience though.

Anonymous said...

I think the problem I have with the whole issue is that I do not have a vested interest in any of the other artists. Adam is the only one whose career and music I care about. I know he's OTT, and I hope with all my heart that what people saw last night does not cause them to never listen to anything he does. He's just too fantastic a vocalist to have lost it in one performance.

ADAM''S KEY BOARD PLAYER IS A WOMAN CALLED LISA. HE KISSED A WOMAN PEOPLE!

Anonymous said...

I don't think most people cared at all who he kissed. I think they were expecting him to display his awesome talent as a vocalist instead of focusing on an S & M cliche. Adam, is capable of making bad choices, just like the rest of us. His voice was flat, the sound was bad, and the focus was on the distraction, not the music.
