I would say that many reality TV shows were killed by people developing good taste and rejecting junk TV projects.
Some reality TV is good, some is complete crap... Over-saturation of reality programs is probably a good part of the problem.. I watch very very few.. But am eternally grateful to American Idol for giving Adam his big break..
There is really nothing "real" about most of those reality tv shows. Most are just crass, crude and classless. (How many of the Housewives are actually still married and know anything about keeping a house and cooking. They all have assistants and probably coudn't even boil water). As for the singing competitions, that field has become oversaturated and only Idol seems to have produced an artist who has achieved some degree of success in recent years. Even though The Voice gets a good audience and receives great reviews about the judges, where are the winners now from each season? Does anyone even remember who they are? I also am grateful to Idol for giving us Adam. There will never be another contestant like him because he is such a special person with unlimited talent.
Anon 10:13AM.... COMPLETELY on point!! *thumbs up*
As for AI: As it's already been mentioned, I too, am thankful for AI.
And, I wouldn't want to see it go in the tank, either.
AI just may be able to recover... if editors/producers would put almost complete focus back on the contestants... and much less on the current "stardom" & "celebrity" of it's judge(s)....
In it's original formula... the judges were more or less retired from active performance entertainment contracts (or a part of the record industry itself and not a recording artist)... had no recent music videos to promote, or looks to sell, etc. They provided a collective balance from the spectrum of the music industry... and were respected as knowledgeable because of the years they HAD put in, and the fact that they were there solely to help judge, discover and promote new talent.
And it really worked.
I think AI should should try going back to it's roots.
No, I don't know any of the winners on AI since Adam because I stopped watching the show! No one compares to Adam - he broke the mold.
