The Washington Post: " ‘American Idol’ says it wants to get back to making stars" like "memorable talent" Adam Lambert

Adam Lambert,  former American Idol contestant (season 8) is one of the "memorable talents" mentioned in the article. He has his own successful solo career as well as performing with and regularly touring to sold out venues worldwide with the iconic group QUEEN.

It's nice to finally see Adam's name listed, as a star, with Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood... as the "most memorable talent" from American Idol. The top three!

Too bad it took so long for everyone else to realize what Glamberts already knew. That "runner-up" tag has almost disappeared... except when it's discussed as incomprehensible.

I hope Adam will have lots of appearances on American Idol during their season... singing, mentoring, stand-in judging, dueting......

I hope American Idol does REALLY well this time around (we'll get to see more of Adam!).

I'm sorry, but I don't think American Idol "made" Adam a star. Their viewers thought that Kris Allen was the real talent. Where is he today? If anyone made Adam a star, it was Adam himself. Yes, Idol introduced him to a wider audience, but he took second place and made it what it is today. By all that is right, Adam should have won Idol because he was the one true talent and showman that year, and Idol has never been the same since. It won't be with its renewal either. One of these days, the fickle charts will actually show him where he belongs: at the top, but that will only happen when the mediocre acts that hit the charts are recognized for what they are: mediocre acts. There is nobody out there who has the vocal chops and the versatility of Adam Lambert. He has the potential to be a superstar in different venues.

Have to admit that I'm completely ambivalent about the new Idol. I will watch if and when Adam is on.

Nanbert said...

Artemis...Of course American Idol didn't "make" Adam a star.... but it provided the platform, exposure and recognition he was looking for to launch from. He was able to finally show a worldwide audience that he was the finest male voice and multi-talented showman of our time!

And don't forget....American Idol is where Queen found out about Adam, too.

Even though Adam didn't "win" American Idol....it provided a huge leap on his journey to the top. He entered because he felt his career had come to a standstill, and he needed more recognition for his talent to prosper. AI provided that platform at a time he felt he needed it....and it worked!

Even though he came in second...very few people believed it then...and certainly not now.

I don't think it's possible for Am Idol to get back to making stars. Not as long as they have judges that are there to benefit themselves first and foremost.

I will watch when they have Adam on.

I'm in agreement with everyone here!! Although AI didn't make ADAM a star they were instrumental inasmuch as they gave him a wide berth with which to present his versatility & TALENT!! No one that was a contestant that season (8) was even close to the performer that ADAM was!! ADAM had the most endearing .. charismatic .. stage presence ... persona .. of ALL of them!! Not only that but some of them were even getting advice from ADAM .. what songs to sing .. how to make their songs sound not so strained .. and yet AI saw fit to deprive him of the title!!

Well ... it's ADAM's work ethic & incomparable TALENT .. "THAT VOICE" ... that has taken him as far as he has come & it will also be those same qualities that will make ADAM LAMBERT a Worldwide STAR!! Not AI ... nor anyone else ... ADAM knows how to keep us begging for more!!

That said ... I too will only tune in to AI if ADAM is appearing on the show no matter what .. performing .. mentor .. guest judge or my hope for many other performances in the coming years!! Something recordable so I can enjoy them over & over when ADAM isn't on the TV!! Wish he had his own weekly variety show!! (Sigh)

I'm sorry everyone blames American Idol for Adam not winning. Actually, American Idol could only go by the votes that were received by them. The fact that there was some vote multiplying by specially adapted phones that were given to Kris Allen fans by an ATT executive was discovered much later...but even then, there was no way to know which votes were which... or even if that was enough to tip the number of votes to Kris.

So, in effect, American Idol was cheated as much as Adam...and the fact that they have cherished him so much since then....makes me believe that they wish the votes had fallen differently. Adam has always spoken of them with great affection, which makes me believe that he holds no grudge or complaint against them for his loss. Why should he?

Lollymop....what do you mean that "the judges that are there to benefit themselves first and foremost"? That seems a little judgemental, don't you think?...especially considering all three judges this year are brand new....and especially in light of "The Voice" format with all the silly little "plays" and little spats among THOSE judges...which Idol never had, nor will it.

Anne Marie said...

I hadn't heard that there was a final decision to renew American Idol. When is it scheduled for? I also would only watch it if Adam is a judge, for me a mentor is not enough exposure to help Adam in his career. Even as a judge it ties them up for a few months, which is fine if nothing else is going on, when he was a judge in OZ it was only a couple of months, it was shortened up a lot for a reason, I don't quite remember.

The newly revived American Idol (this time on ABC, no longer on Fox) begins to air on March 11, 2018. Check the embedded link to read the full article.

Lambert Outlaw.... you said "and yet AI saw fit to DEPRIVE him of the title!"

That sounds like you think American Idol deliberately gave Kris Allen the win! Do you really feel that way? They pick the winner according to who has the most votes. An independent company collects and counts the votes. Adam was so definitely the judge's favorite...Simon even went so far as to suggest that one should not assume he would win, but to vote if they wanted him to win.

Yes, Adam lost. But it wasn't American Idol's fault. They had to use the vote count that they were given.

I don't know why everyone is so "down" on American Idol...and yet everyone seems to unfairly blame AI for Adam's loss.

Maybe it was due to a huge number of homophobe votes...or perhaps the multi-vote phones handed out by that ATT executive were enough to cause the loss....or maybe all the Evangelical Christian vote left over from #3 (I forget his name)went to Kris and tipped the scales....or all of the above.

But certainly American Idol didn't "DEPRIVE him of the title"........the voters did!

I will ever be thankful to American Idol for providing the opportunity for us to meet Adam, to see what an incredible performer he was then and is now. From the moment I first saw Adam on Idol (on Michael Jackson night when he sang Black or White), I was absolutely stunned by his presence, his vocals, his on stage intensity, and at the same time, his sweet nature, his gentle and humble soul. His generosity with his thanks to the band, and his willingness to help his fellow contestants with their performances as well. My husband and I were literally, from that moment on, huge and dedicated admirers & supporters of Adam Lambert on American Idol. And have continued to be major fans in the years since. My husband said "We have to vote for Adam!" which shocked me because we had never actively voted for anyone on Idol or on any other TV show. He has since been to several of Adam's (and Queen + Adam Lambert) concerts, has met Adam (they had a nice chat while I stood there in awe..). After the Finale, when Adam was so supportive and gracious to (a clearly shocked) Kris Allen (who I liked but Adam was my choice hands down as THE best of the best), my husband has refused to watch that last few moments ever again. He finds it too painful, as I know so many fans do also.

HOWEVER.. As others have said in comments above, I truly do not blame American Idol. I blame the voters who for one reason or another chose to vote for someone else. As was their right to do. Adam is not the only superlative Idol contestant who did not quote unquote "win". Think of Jennifer Hudson who didn't win her season but has done exceedingly well anyway. Talent will will out in the long run, given a chance to be seen and appreciated. That was the key for Adam, to be seen, to be appreciated. If not for Idol, it may have never happened for him.

I am thrilled for Adam, thrilled that he had the opportunity to show the world what an incredible singer, entertainer and gentleman he is. If it had not been for Idol, we likely would never have met Adam. We would not be here today here on this blog, a blog that some of us have been coming to since it first was created by our friend "Admin", and is lovingly carried on by @AdminFan, and when I have a chance, by me (because I adore Adam and want to help him in some small way to continue to astonish and amaze us. I originally came here to learn more about Adam, to share my thoughts, feelings, and admiration for that lovely man. We've watched him grow as a performer, watched him blossom over the years, watched (and listened to him) hone and fine tune his skills as an artist, with many thanks as well to the two gentlemen from London, Queen's Dr. Brian May & Roger Taylor who recognized Adam as that very special gifted human being, that "Gift From God", with that "One in a billion" voice.

Adam has said over and over again how grateful he is to American Idol for his chance to show us all what he is capable of. And I thank them, and Adam, for taking that step. His life was forever changed and so was mine. I've met some other fans over the years who are wonderful friends now. I could go on, but enough for now!

Not gonna keep beating that dead horse ... there are those of us who feel ADAM was "DEPRIVED" of the title even though he was/is/always will be the Best AI has ever had as a contestant!! Most of the winners were reticent to show what they could do in the beginning ... but "blossomed" as the season progressed. Not so with ADAM ... he was always out there & in your face with every performance ... he gave his ALL every week of the season (8) ... he didn't have to improve with each performance ... his stage presence was riveting ... all you could do is sit in AWE of this young personable young talent who never ceased to Smile with disbelief when he was praised by everyone & that Smile never faded ... not even if he was criticized unfairly by Simon on occasion!! He never became surly nor did he become visibly angry as some of the others!! ADAM accomplished what he wanted to do on AI & I think that when he shows his gratitude to them it's because they let him have the input he had which made him the BEST!!

No!! ADAM didn't become a Star because of AI ... it was in spite of the fact that he didn't win!! That loss could have had an adverse effect on his career if ADAM wasn't the person that he is!! He was already a Star when he went on AI ... all he needed was a platform to show the World ... for that ... I say "Thank You to AI"!! It's good that they realize & admit it now!! JMHO

This thread is full of so much passion! I love it! glitzylady, you really said it all. I too was captivated from the moment I saw him. He grabbed me and never let go. My standards for what a really great singer is have risen many-fold. Yes, I like other singers, too, but Adam is in a class all by himself. I love sharing my passion with the gang here. We all "get it." It's a journey that is teaching me so much about the music business, online skills, and above all, the power of love for a human being and the many things he stands for: acceptance, perseverance, gentleness, loyalty, guts, and so much more.

I can't imagine my life without him now.

Nanbert said...

glitzylady and Dee R Gee......Brilliant remarks and discussion here!....

Maybe this was a good time for all Glamberts to get their thoughts and feelings out about the "American Idol" period of Adam's life...and OURS. It turned out to be a major "high" in many of our lives....mine certainly....and a major "low" in many of our lives....mine certainly again.

But out of it all came this shining star. Can there be any doubt that American Idol knew what they had there? They gave him free rein in all his performances...aided and abetted him as much as he needed.... how often did Adam say "they worked it OUT"? They helped him make some of the most original and iconic performances ever seen on American Idol...and let him "bend the rules" when he wished.

They brought QUEEN for him to perform with in the finals... we know what an earthshaking moment THAT turned out to be!

Try to imagine what life might have been for Adam without American Idol. He was 27 years old, frustrated by a career that had stagnated, feeling the need to be exposed to a larger audience, and to people who could advance his career.....the need to be KNOWN and his talent RECOGNIZED.

We all like to think that "the cream always rises to the top", and that Adam would not be denied because he is ADAM. But the truth is that it's a hard world to break into, and many worthy talents just peter out for lack of recognition. Even Adam might never have made it past those last hurdles without AI's PLATFORM.

He got exactly what he hoped for from American Idol...win or lose...no one who saw it can ever forget his amazing performances. And just as good are the videos from AI always ready on youtube to educate newcomers.

Last but not least, we have each other...Glamberts...brought together by one common interest...most stemming from first seeing that handsome young man confidantly stand up on American Idol and sing an excerpt of "Bohemian Rhapsody"..........and the seed was planted!

Dee R Gee said...

Mirela, I agree with you. Nanbert is one of the best, most active members of our group. So glad she's here!

And just so it won't get lost on the Grammy thread, I want to make one comment about the special Grammy honors coming up later. I think it's so good that the Grammys offer special awards and Lifetime Achievement Grammys.

So many iconic singers and bands get overlooked by the Grammys after decades of performing fantastic music. Queen is only one example. It's so frustrating sometimes when the "teen idol of the month" walks off with multiple Grammys after one hit song or one album. And yet so many performers who have paid their dues many times over don't get the awards until their careers are almost over. Where were those awards when these bands were in their heyday, filling stadiums and arenas, performing for millions? Sometimes the appreciation for the quality that was always there isn't recognized for a very long time.

I am so thrilled that Queen will get that recognition even though it's long overdue. And Adam will get to witness it and be proud that he's been part of such a great musical legacy.

Nanbert said...

Mirela and Dee R Gee.....Thanks guys....but are you sure you aren't finding a polite way to say....LONGWINDED? Yeah, I know I am...especially when I get enthused about something.... and I DO get enthused about all things Adam!

However, that's no excuse for being an overbearing "comment hog"! You are very kind and diplomatic, but I will try to be more concise in 2018!

It'll be hard, because there's something about Adam that makes me "wax poetic".... and you are the only ones I can talk to about him.

LTA said...

AI was only the Platform!!! It was Adam and his dedicated fans made the impossible and look at him now!!!:) Our International Superstar indeed!!!:)..... AI will never find a superstar like Adam Lambert!!!!:). He is the only one for this generation!:)

Artemis said...

Nanbert, I allowed that AI introduced Adam to a wider audience, but they didn't make him a star. He did from the way he approached the competition in the first place. He then put out his first album with the AI label given him, and it may have gone by the wayside, except he had the courage and foresight to do a solo tour. I don't believe any other idol ever did that. And yes, he WAS introduced to Queen, so I'll give Idol that. It was predictable that mainstream America would vote for Kris over Adam since he didn't fit their idea of the show. He still has yet to get the chart recognition and radio play that he deserves. All I am saying is that as far as talent and showmanship, sheer courage and audacity, Adam set his own star on fire to the world. At one point Simon Cowell didn't even want to pass Adam through to the level of the competition. So much for HIS judgement.

Mi Re La said...

Nanbert really appreciate your comments and I read them with pleasure. Keep it so in 2018. And the prize for originality goes to ..... Lam-My for his poems.

Anne Marie said...

I agree with all of the comments, but would like to add a personal opinion of mine. Adam was great on AI, but I like him more now, since he has aged his voice has become richer, and he sings a bit lower. After watching all of AI again, his voice has matured, and to me he sounds 100% better. Someone said that when he reached about 35, his voice would become deeper, and it has. I dont' think WWTLF would have sounded anywhere near as good as he can sing it today. JMO. AI gave him the platform he needed so badly. Also Queen has given a different platform he also needed badly. It still amazes me, when I mention his name to people, they still haven't heard of him. I am hoping his next album will be more rewarding, and he will get a hit, it's long overdue.

Nanbert said...

Artemis... you're quite right that AI never made Adam a star. I certainly never said or even thought that. I either explained myself poorly, or you misunderstood me.

Adam was a star BEFORE he went on American Idol....just a UNDISCOVERED one. And he proved that that he was a star with every performance...and American Idol enabled him every step of the way. By the time American Idol was over nearly every person who saw him also knew he was a star. American Idol only gave him the opportunity, facility and musicians to SHOW his "wares" to the rest of the world. Adam did the rest....brilliantly.

And, by the way, you know that Simon Cowell always played the part of "curmudgeon". After getting the panel all upset by his "theatrical" complaint against Adam during his audition he readily said "yes"for Adam to join the show. It was evident that he intended to say "yes" from the beginning....he was just "messing" with the panel. Watch it on youtube again.

Also, don't you remember Simon saying to Adam during AI, "the goal of this show is to find a worldwide star, and I seriously believe we have found that in you". He reminded people that they shouldn't assume that Adam would win, but to vote for him if they wanted him to.
He gave him a standing ovation. He said that Adam was one of the most talented and original contestants that Idol had ever had.

Simon personally got permission from Led Zeppelin for Adam to sing "Whole Lotta Love"...because Adam badly wanted to. And he was instrumental in getting Queen and Kiss in the finale for Adam. When questioned before the end of American Idol, when asked who he thought should win...he said Adam. And he was probably instrumental in getting Adam as judge on Xfactor Australia.

I believe that Simon was in Adam's corner from day one...but he still had to play HIS part.

Dee R Gee said...

Nanbert, you are right about Simon's role in Adam's rise on AI. There was a little short-lived "backlash" when Adam almost slipped out of one of those later rounds. That's when Simon told the audience to vote for Adam "if they wanted to." He knew that many voters were so confident in Adam's continued advancement on the show, that they were getting lackadaisical in voting for him. Simon sensed this and gave everyone a gentle reminder. He never said, "I want you to vote for Adam." But neither did he want to see Adam not advance due to voter laziness. Simon saw Adam as a contestant who deserved to get to the Top Two. It would have been a major disappointment if he didn't. He was obviously the leading talent of the season.

I've have found it a little strange that there has been virtually no further personal connection between Adam and Simon, not even in casual show biz talk. Adam is asked about Simon occasionally and answers appropriately. But if Simon has said anything about Adam since Season 8, I haven't heart it.

Nanbert said...

Dee R Gee....I'm glad you noticed that about Simon too. I think both he and American Idol have been given a unfair rap by many Glamberts for Adam's loss on the show.

One can't help but want to cast blame, and it's still hard to believe that EVERY voter who saw him didn't vote for Adam... or, even more unbelievably, voted for someone else! But they did! There's no way to know if that illegal multi-calling phone votes tipped the scales.

As far as Adam and Simon having any later connection...I've no clue. I've often wondered if they had a chance to talk after Queen and Adam's guest appearance on the X Factor U.K....which was brilliant, btw.

From things I've read Simon does not have much of anything to do with AI contestants-- his focus is on those U.K. Winners he personally signs. Cowbell is not a friendly kind of guy as far as I can tell.

I love the pic of him with the hat pins. Also that it shows off his tattoo on his right shoulder. It's not my screen saver, but I have it in a small version on my desk top so I can enlarge it anytime. He's perfect, IMHO. (My screen saver is also a pic of Adam.)
